Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you in the pink of health. I, Dimpy Ahuja and I am a teacher by profession. I am writing this letter to apply for the job application as a care taker for half a year, according to the advertisement mentioned in the local news paper of Australia.

Firstly, I would like to say that I have experience of 5 years in teaching and 2 years as a professional Nanny. I am a calm, composed and benevolent in nature and I am really fond of kids. I believe that this job suits me well due to its nearby location as well as I can be helpful to the kid in terms of studies and can indulge him/her into multiple extra curricular activities which indeed be beneficial in developing cognitive skillset.

Apart from this, on weekends or on day off I would love to engage myself into volunteering activities for the welfare of under privileged children. Thus, I firmly believe I suit best as per the requirement provided in the newspaper.

Thank you for time and consideration. I would be a looking forward to a positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Dimpy Ahuja

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining your motivation, highlighting your suitability, and describing your plans for free time. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention your experience as a teacher and nanny, you could have provided more specific examples of how you handled challenges with children to make your case more compelling. Additionally, the opening greeting 'Dear Sir' is slightly inconsistent with the prompt's instruction to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam', though this is a minor oversight. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the requirements sufficiently.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Apart from this', and 'Thus' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother; some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is clear, and the overall structure follows the standard conventions of a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the relationship between ideas is more naturally linked rather than relying on simple list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'benevolent', 'cognitive skillset', and 'under privileged'. These choices show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'indulge him/her into' (which should be 'engage him/her in') and 'job application as a care taker' (which is slightly redundant). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and appropriately for the context of a job application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I, Dimpy Ahuja and I am a teacher' (which is a run-on/fragmented structure) and 'indulge him/her into multiple extra curricular activities which indeed be beneficial' (missing a verb, 'would be'). Additionally, 'Thank you for time' should be 'Thank you for your time'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically complete.
