Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
The purpose of my writing today is to express my interest to contribute to your family's daily routine.
Addressing my interest, I would love to provide my services for your childcare and household works.
Considering my experience, I believe I am suitable as I have 4 year experience working as Care giver at Fortis hospital, Brampton. In particular, not only I am bilingual, but I am also expert in providing emergency services like CPR and first aid. Since I worked as a Caregiver, I have learned how to be patient with the kids, which means your child will always feel safe and supported.
While I am staying in Australia, I plan to explore various public parks and volunteer in community events, as this will allow me to learn more about the local culture, meet new people and contribute positively to the community.
I would be grateful if you could consider me for this role.
Could you please share me the exact starting date for this position?
I sincerely value your support in this matter.
Sincerely,
Varinder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the job, provided relevant professional experience as a caregiver, and outlined your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how your specific experience at the hospital would translate to caring for a six-year-old child in a home environment. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph dedicated to a specific requirement of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In particular', 'Since', and 'While' helps to connect ideas effectively. However, the paragraphing is a bit fragmented; the letter could benefit from a more standard structure where the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion are clearly delineated. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. Improving the flow between your professional experience and your personal plans would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'bilingual', 'emergency services', and 'contribute positively'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'express my interest to contribute' (should be 'express my interest in contributing') and 'share me the exact starting date' (should be 'share with me'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations related to childcare or professional experience would strengthen this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I have 4 year experience' (should be 'four years of experience') and 'Since I worked as a Caregiver' (should be 'As I have worked as a caregiver'). Additionally, there is a minor error in 'not only I am bilingual, but I am also expert' (should be 'not only am I bilingual, but I am also an expert'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication.
