Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I read the advertisement you recently gave in an Australian magazine, that you need someone who can live with your family and can take care of your infant. I am writing this letter because I feel like I am the best candidate for this job.

I would love to do this job because I have my aunt's kids at home, whom I always like to play with. Whenever my aunt is not at home, I take care of both of them. Moreover, I recently did an early childhood course, in which I learnt the mentality of the children and how they should be treated in every situation. I am also an expert in feeding kids as well.

Furthermore, I would like to explain that I love reading books, so in my free time I will enjoy myself with books in the library. Apart from that, I will explore new places in Australia with some of my friends who are living there in the same city.

According to your demand of caretaker for your six-year-old child, I will be a perfect match and I can guarantee your child will enjoy being with me. I will wait for your reply.

Regards,

Arsh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your motivation, detailing your suitability, and describing your plans for free time. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, there is a minor inaccuracy in the content; you refer to the child as an 'infant' in the first paragraph, but the prompt specifies a 'six-year-old child'. This inconsistency slightly affects the precision of your response. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details provided align perfectly with the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Apart from that' to link your sentences and paragraphs. While the flow is logical, the transition between the introduction and the body could be slightly smoother. Overall, the structure is clear and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'best candidate', 'early childhood course', and 'perfect match' are used effectively. However, there are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'mentality of the children' (which is slightly unnatural; 'developmental needs' or 'behavior' would be better) and 'gave in an advertisement' (you should say 'placed an advertisement'). Expanding your range of collocations would help elevate your score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I read the advertisement you recently gave' (should be 'placed') and 'my aunt's kids at home, whom I always like to play with' (a bit informal). Additionally, 'mentality of the children' is grammatically correct but stylistically awkward. Despite these minor errors, your grammar is generally accurate and does not impede communication.
