You have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine for someone to live with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child.
Write a letter to the parents. In your letter
- explain why you would like the job
- give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ
- say how you would spend your free time while you are in Australia
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
The reason of writing this letter to you is I recently came across an advertisement where it was mentioned you're looking for a suitable candidate who could look after your six-year-old child.
I would like to express my interest in the given vacancy. I have been studying early childhood as my major here in Australia as matter of fact for me it's really important to have a full-time six months of employment in my chosen field as without that I won't be able to graduate.
Furthermore, I think I might be a suitable choice to hire as I'm the eldest child in my family from where I have an innate caring nature towards children. To stand my opinion you could also consider my degree which is completely based on real-life experience how to handle children of growing age along with what challenges they could face. I believe we all my knowledge I can take great care of your child.
To conclude I want to add and a small piece of information about myself - I'm an international student here in Australia a full-time college student who likes to spend her free time wondering around the city and getting to know the culture and diversity which is prevalent here.
Looking forward to hear a positive answer from your end.
Your Faithfully,
Julie Chaurasia

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation (the need for a six-month placement for your degree), your suitability (your background as an eldest child and your early childhood studies), and your plans for free time (exploring the city). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the structure could be more refined. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your academic studies and the specific needs of a six-year-old is more explicitly articulated to demonstrate a stronger focus on the employer's requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore' and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'To stand my opinion' and 'The reason of writing this letter to you is'. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different points. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother, avoiding repetitive sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'vacancy', 'innate', and 'prevalent'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'wondering around' (should be 'wandering') and 'The reason of writing' (should be 'The reason for writing'). The phrase 'To stand my opinion' is also non-standard. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and proofreading for small word-choice errors that can affect the professional tone of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I believe we all my knowledge' (likely meant 'with all my knowledge') and 'Looking forward to hear' (should be 'Looking forward to hearing'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction that occasionally distract the reader. While you attempt complex sentences, they are not always error-free. Increasing your control over verb forms and prepositions will help improve your accuracy and allow you to express more complex ideas with greater precision.
