Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter after reading your latest advertisement in an Australian magazine regarding the job posting and I am interested to apply for the same position.
My name is Punam and I’m an immigrant in Australia looking for a job; I am graduated from an early childhood educator wherein; I did my placement at child care. Additionally, I am alone in this country so I have no one to care for which can be more appropriate to live with your family and look after your 6 year old toddler.
Moreover, I am an artist who likes to do the sketch and spend my leisure time in nourishing my hobby. Apart from this I sell my paintings on my personal website so basically I work from home and prefer to be more busy in my lifestyle.
Also I have only few friends whom I see on the festivals that’s why there would be no gatherings which is more convenient for you and your family. Hope for your positive response. Thank you
Yours faithfully,
Punam Yadav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your motivation, highlighted your background in early childhood education, and described your leisure activities. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention your background, you could have provided more specific details about your experience with children to make your application more persuasive. Additionally, the tone is occasionally inconsistent; referring to a six-year-old as a 'toddler' is inaccurate, as toddlers are typically aged 1–3. To improve, ensure your ideas are fully expanded and that you use terminology appropriate to the context of the job advertisement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Apart from this' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed, and some transitions feel mechanical. The connection between your personal life and the suitability for the job could be smoother. For instance, the transition to your social life in the final paragraph is abrupt. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed theme would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your points clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'placement', 'early childhood educator', and 'leisure time'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'I am graduated' (should be 'I am a graduate' or 'I graduated') and 'prefer to be more busy in my lifestyle'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to childcare and professional correspondence, and work on using words in their correct grammatical forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I am graduated', 'I have no one to care for which can be more appropriate', and 'I have only few friends'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of semicolons and commas. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to limit your score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses will help improve your accuracy.
