Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my serious interest for a job which I have noticed in an Australian magazine yesterday.
I would really appreciate it if I could get the opportunity as it aligns my skills and profession. I finished my course last year and gained experience while working with a child care center. Therefore, working with children makes me more comfortable to apply for this job.
Additionally, I could manage the responsibilities from picking and dropping to school to other tasks such as cleanliness, helping with homework, and developing hobbies. By scheduling and prioritizing the tasks, I can assist with organization and well-being. These abilities allow me to handle a child with great care while encouraging for critical thinking and creativity.
During me free time, I am planning to pursue further studies to master my career. Besides this, I would love to explore a local culture and food of the nation.
Thank you for considering me.
Yours faithfully,
Amanjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your interest, detail your suitability through your childcare background, and outline your plans for free time. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention 'developing hobbies' and 'critical thinking', these points could be expanded with more specific examples of how you would engage the child. The response is functional and addresses the requirements clearly, but it lacks the depth of detail that would elevate it to a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Therefore', and 'Besides this' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally a bit mechanical. Some transitions feel slightly abrupt, and the connection between your professional experience and your ability to handle a child could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'aligns my skills', 'prioritizing', and 'well-being'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'noticed in an Australian magazine' (should be 'saw') and 'explore a local culture' (should be 'explore the local culture'). You also use 'comfortable to apply' in a way that is slightly unnatural. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, the control is not always consistent. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it does not show the flexibility or precision required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'interest for a job' (should be 'interest in'), 'during me free time' (should be 'my'), and 'encouraging for critical thinking' (should be 'encouraging critical thinking'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the reader can easily understand your intent. You show a good attempt at using complex structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. To improve, focus on preposition usage and possessive pronouns, as these are recurring areas where minor slips occur.
