Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are having a great week. My name is Robin and I am writing this email to address the interest for baby-sitting for six-year-old child for six months duration which is mentioned in the advertisement in an Australian magazine. I am looking forward to it as I always wanted to immerse myself into Australian culture, and this opportunity feels ideal way to experience it.

Moreover, my work experience is about 2 years till now. I am taking care of the children who are five to seven years old as well as I have part-time experience in tutoring class 5 students, which has given me deep understanding to engage children in games, reading and outdoor activities. Furthermore, I am having first-aid certificate, ensuring that your offspring will be always safe and supportive environment.

During my free time, I would like to explore the neighborhood and nearby places to get deep understanding of culture. I am a good photographer and I like to explore the nature as well, so I intend to spend my weekends hiking, visiting museums, and improving my cooking skills by learning traditional meals.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how I can contribute to your family.

Yours faithfully,

Robin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting the job, provide relevant details about your childcare experience and first-aid certification, and outline your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a family seeking a live-in helper. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'During my free time' to transition between ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the task. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear. While some transitions are standard, they are used accurately and contribute to the overall coherence of the text, which is characteristic of a Band 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'immerse myself into Australian culture' and 'deep understanding' are used effectively. However, there are minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'address the interest for baby-sitting' (should be 'express my interest in babysitting') and 'having first-aid certificate' (should be 'possess a first-aid certificate'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the highest bands. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the context of a job application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am looking forward to it as I always wanted to immerse myself...'. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I am having first-aid certificate' (missing article 'a') and 'your offspring will be always safe and supportive environment' (the environment is not what is being kept safe). Despite these occasional slips, your control of grammar is generally good, and the meaning is always clear. The errors are non-systematic and do not cause difficulty for the reader, which aligns with the Band 6.5-7.0 range.
