Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you, as I saw your advertisement in an Australian magazine. I am interested in a position to take care of your six year old child.

I would like to share my love towards children. They are the precious gift for us. Since young children are active, I love to spend my time with them. Another reason is that it would be beneficial for me because I would have the opportunity to live with a family.

I want to address my previous experiences. I have an excellent track record as a baby sitter. I worked with around 4 families in Australia and we are still in the contact. I believe I will show myself as a part of your family. Your child will definitely adjust with me, as I already know the behavior and personalities of these age children.

In my leisure time, I usually visit to orphanage houses. I love to spread happiness among them. Additionally, their is an open park area near my apartment building. It is very satisfying for me to sit under a tree to enjoy nature.

I am waiting for your positive response.

Yours sincerely,

Rubia

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your motivation, detail your suitability as a babysitter, and describe your leisure activities. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly less standard than the requested 'Dear Sir or Madam'. The ideas are relevant, but some sections, such as the explanation of your free time, could be developed with more specific detail to better demonstrate your personality. Overall, the task is addressed clearly and effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single topic, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Another reason is' and 'Additionally' to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in places, and some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of the letter is logical and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'excellent track record' and 'adjust with me' are used effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'visit to orphanage houses' (should be 'visit orphanages') and 'their is' (a spelling error for 'there is'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Using more precise synonyms would enhance the professional tone of your application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'They are the precious gift for us' (should be 'a precious gift') and 'we are still in the contact' (should be 'in contact'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in 'six year old' (should be 'six-year-old'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help improve your score.
