Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
I am very interested in this position because I enjoy spending time with children and would also like to experience Australian culture and lifestyle.
I believe I would be a suitable person for this job because I am responsible, patient and friendly. I have experience looking after young children in my family, so I understand the importance of keeping them safe and making sure they are comfortable. I am also willing to help with simple household tasks and follow the family’s daily routine.
During my free time, I would like to explore Australia and learn more about its culture. I would also enjoy visiting local parks, museums and other interesting places. In addition, I could spend some of my free time improving my English and making new friends.
I would be grateful if you could consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
gagandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt: it explains why the writer would like the job, provides details about suitability, and outlines how free time would be spent in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a letter of application. However, a significant constraint of this task is the minimum word count of 150 words. As confirmed by the length check, the student's response contains 148 words, falling two words short of the requirement. While the content fully addresses the task requirements and ideas are adequately presented, this minor length deficiency prevents the response from achieving a higher score. Task Achievement is therefore penalised slightly for under-length, resulting in a band score of 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching structure. Each paragraph addresses a specific bullet point from the prompt, making the progression of ideas easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes such as motivation, suitability, and free-time plans. Cohesive devices are handled reasonably well, using linking words and phrases like 'In addition', 'so', and 'During my free time' to connect ideas, although referencing and transitions are somewhat straightforward rather than sophisticated. Overall, the writing demonstrates a coherent arrangement that meets the criteria for Band 7, where logical organisation and clear progression are maintained throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general task of this nature. Everyday terms and descriptive adjectives such as 'responsible', 'patient', and 'comfortable' are used accurately. There are also attempts at slightly less common lexical items, such as 'daily routine' and 'experience Australian culture'. However, the vocabulary tends to be quite standard and lacks the more flexible or sophisticated range typical of higher bands. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout, meaning communication is never impeded. This performance aligns comfortably with the descriptors for Band 6, showing sufficient vocabulary for the task while remaining relatively simple.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. Examples of complex structures include 'I am very interested in this position because I enjoy spending time with children...' and 'I would be grateful if you could consider my application.' Grammatical control is strong, with frequent error-free sentences and correct punctuation. Minor errors are absent, and verb tenses are handled correctly across present and conditional forms. Because the majority of sentences are accurate and a variety of structures are used successfully without impeding communication, this response earns a solid Band 7 for grammar.
