Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have seen an advertisement in an Austrial magazine that you are looking for a day care service for your 6 year old kid. My name is Rajwinder and I am care taker. I provide home to home day care service. I really like the job opportunity and I feel like I will be a good fit for you.

I am an Austrian citizen and I know all the rules and regulation. I am a retired teacher used to work in the Drinkwater Elementry school for several years. I would be a suitable person for this vacancy because I live in the same neighbourhood. I have several years of day care experience with kids. I can look after your kid at any time 7 days a week. I can teach your kid moral and ethical values. I can take him to the play ground, swimming classes etc.

In my free time I work in a day care as a volunteer in Australia. I work there 2 hours in the morning to play with the kids. I do gardening in my free time.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

your sincerely,

Rajwinder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task. They explain why they would like the job, noting they live in the neighbourhood and want a fitting role. They give details of suitability by mentioning their background as a retired teacher and experience in day care. They also state how they spend their free time, mentioning volunteering and gardening. However, there is a notable contradiction and factual confusion in the letter: the writer states they are an 'Austrian citizen' and saw the advertisement in an 'Austrial magazine,' yet they are applying for a job in Australia and reference living in the same neighbourhood. This slight confusion regarding country and nationality impacts the overall clarity of context, placing the response at a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a clear overall arrangement with distinct paragraphs for introduction, suitability details, free time activities, and sign-off. Cohesive devices are generally simple, such as repeating 'I can' at the start of multiple sentences. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct topics like qualifications versus free time. However, referencing is sometimes repetitive, and the logical flow could be smoother through the use of a wider variety of transitional phrases rather than starting consecutive sentences with the pronoun 'I'. Overall, the organization is coherent and easy to follow, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with terms like 'neighbourhood', 'volunteer', and 'ethical values' demonstrating a satisfactory range. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'Austrial' instead of 'Australian', 'caretaker' written as two words ('care taker'), and 'Elementry' instead of 'Elementary'. Furthermore, confusing 'Austrian' with 'Australian' is a significant lexical lapse given the context of an Australian magazine. While the intended meaning is communicated effectively throughout, these errors restrict the score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I would be a suitable person for this vacancy because I live in the same neighbourhood.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including 'a retired teacher used to work' (missing relative pronoun/auxiliary) and 'I am looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing'). Punctuation and capitalization are mostly fine, but the grammatical errors are frequent enough to cause occasional minor distraction for the reader, aligning closely with the Band 5.5 descriptor.
