Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir and madam,

I am writing regarding the advertisement I saw in an Australian magazine about looking after your six-year-old child for six months. I am very interested in this opportunity and would like to apply for the position.

I would like this job because I really enjoy spending time with children and helping them with their daily activities. In addition, living with an Australian family would give me an excellent opportunity to experience Australian culture and improve my English communication skills. I believe the six-month arrangement would also allow me to build a good relationship with your family and your child.

I believe I would be a suitable person for this position because I am responsible, patient, friendly, and dependable. I have experience looking after younger children in my family, including helping them with homework, preparing simple meals, and playing games with them. I understand that taking care of a young child requires close attention, particularly regarding safety and daily routines.

During my free time in Australia, I would like to explore local attractions, learn more about Australian culture, and meet new people. I would also spend some time studying and improving my English. On weekends, if possible, I would enjoy visiting nearby cities, beaches, and other popular places.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Priyanshu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all three bullet points outlined in the task prompt. The writer clearly explains the reasons for wanting the job, such as a love for children and a desire to experience Australian culture, meeting the first bullet point successfully. Details of suitability are provided through relevant personal qualities and practical family childcare experience, fulfilling the second bullet point. Additionally, the writer clearly states how free time would be spent by mentioning exploring local attractions, studying English, and visiting nearby cities and beaches. All parts of the prompt are fully developed, and the tone and format of a formal letter are maintained throughout, resulting in a solid performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter displays a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening purpose down to the closing sign-off. Each paragraph addresses a distinct theme corresponding to the task requirements, such as motivations, suitability, and free-time plans. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the response. Cohesive devices are employed naturally, though there is some reliance on standard transition phrases such as 'In addition' and 'During my free time'. Overall, the message flows smoothly, making it easy for the reader to follow the writer's ideas without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for a general task response. Phrases such as 'daily activities', 'experience Australian culture', 'responsible, patient, friendly, and dependable', and 'local attractions' demonstrate clear and natural control of language. While the vocabulary is largely standard and functional rather than advanced or highly idiomatic, it is entirely adequate for the task. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout, and communication is never impeded by lexical limitations, supporting a comfortable band 7 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures with a high degree of accuracy. The writer successfully employs complex structures, such as 'I believe that taking care of a young child requires close attention, particularly regarding safety and daily routines' and 'On weekends, if possible, I would enjoy visiting nearby cities...' Punctuation and verb tenses are well controlled throughout the letter. The majority of sentences are error-free, and minor greeting punctuation errors aside, the grammatical handling reflects strong control.
