Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the position of living with your family for six months and looking after your six-year-old child.

I would particularly like this job because I have always enjoyed spending time with children, and I believe living with an Australian family would also be an excellent opportunity to improve my English and experience Australian culture. I am a responsible, patient and caring person, and I can eassily build a friendly relationshhip with children. I am also willing to help with basic household tasks and ensure that your child is safe, comfortable and engaged in useful activities.

During my free time, I would like to explore Australia and visit some famous tourist attractions. I am particularly interested in nature, photography and outdoor activities. I would also enjoy spending time with your family and learning Australian traditions and lifestyle.

I would be grateful if you would consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

raja

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all parts of the task prompt. You clearly explained why you would like the job by mentioning your enjoyment of children, the opportunity to improve your English, and experiencing Australian culture. You also gave specific details of why you are a suitable person, highlighting your responsible, patient, and caring nature alongside your willingness to help with household tasks. Finally, you outlined how you would spend your free time by mentioning your interest in nature, photography, and exploring tourist attractions, as well as spending time with the family. The tone of the letter is polite, appropriate, and consistently meets the general letter-writing format. All bullet points are well-developed and fully covered, resulting in a strong performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Your letter shows clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with a standard opening, transition smoothly into your motivation for the job and personal suitability, and then dedicate the third paragraph entirely to your free-time plans before concluding politely. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'I would particularly like this job because', 'I am also willing to', and 'During my free time'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, making the letter very easy to read and follow. Referencing is clear, and the overall progression of ideas feels natural and logical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary for this task with some flexibility and precision. You used appropriate lexical items related to employment and personal qualities, such as 'responsible', 'patient', 'caring', and 'engage in useful activities'. However, there are a couple of minor mechanical errors, specifically the spelling mistake 'eassily' and a typo in 'relationshhip'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is more than adequate to convey your message clearly, and you attempted less common phrases such as 'experience Australian culture' and 'famous tourist attractions' quite successfully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You displayed a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout your response. For example, you successfully utilised complex structures with subordinate clauses, such as 'I am writing to express my interest in the position of living with your family for six months and looking after your six-year-old child.' The majority of your sentences are grammatically accurate and well-controlled. Punctuation is generally sound, and although there is a minor spelling flaw noted in the lexical section, your grammatical accuracy remains high with no errors that impede communication. Your control over tense and modal verbs is also solid.
