Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing you regarding the job advertisement which you recently published in Australian Magazine. I am highly interested in applying for a baby sitter job.
Actually, I am free from college for six months starting from January. It would be great opportunity for me to look after your child while staying at your house. Moreover, I love spending time with the kids.
I would assure you that I will be best candidate for this role. As, I am studying to become an Early Childhood Educator. I do have some hands-on-experience in taking care of the children as I have done my placement at the daycare. I can take care of the baby's food, clothes, sleep. Besides that, me and your kid can play various simple games together.
I also want to share that I run a small business of selling paintings. I will be spending my leisure time to make some paintings. I hope you will not have not issue with that.
Hoping to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Navneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You begin by clearly explaining why you would like the job by mentioning your college break and your love for children. You then provide good details regarding your suitability, noting that you are studying to be an Early Childhood Educator and have practical daycare experience. Finally, you adequately address how you would spend your free time by explaining your painting business. The tone is polite and appropriate for a formal application letter. To reach an even higher band, you could expand slightly more on your duties and experiences, but overall, all parts of the task are well-addressed with a clear and consistent purpose throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The paragraphs are separated effectively, with each one dedicated to a different aspect of the prompt, such as your reasons for applying, your background, and your free-time activities. You make use of some basic cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Besides that', and 'I also want to share that'. However, some of the transitions feel a bit mechanical or simplistic. To achieve a higher score, you could use a wider range of cohesive phrases more flexibly and ensure that referencing between sentences is smoother. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, ensuring the reader can easily follow your message from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully using topic-specific terms such as 'advertisement', 'Early Childhood Educator', and 'hands-on-experience'. There are some successful word choices, but you also rely on relatively basic phrasing in places, such as 'take care of the baby's food, clothes, sleep'. There are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as writing 'a baby sitter job' instead of 'a babysitting position', and 'will not have not issue' in the fourth paragraph. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and adequately address the prompt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using clauses such as 'As, I am studying to become an Early Childhood Educator' and 'I will be spending my leisure time to make some paintings'. However, your writing contains several grammatical errors and punctuation slips. For instance, the sentence starting with 'As,' incorrectly separates a dependent clause from its main clause with a full stop. Additionally, there is a typo in the final paragraph ('you will not have not issue'). Prepositional usage and article selection could also be more precise in places. The majority of your sentences communicate their meaning, but the frequency of these errors prevents you from reaching a higher band score.
