Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in response to the advertisement published by you in a newspaper.
To begin with, as I am pursuing my graduation in teaching so this would be really good oppurtunity for me to learn and experience related to taking care of children with their daily needs and for also teaching him the basic education. As, it will help me in building up my patience when it comes to handling the kids.
On the other hand, as the oldest child in my family i already have experience in taking care of the kids needs and also have the required patience. Moreover, when it comes to spending the leisure time I would love to spend it on exploring the nature and in learning the history and geographical aspects of the country itself.
Please let me know what you think. I will wait for your response.
Your Sincerely,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student explains why they want the job by mentioning their studies in teaching and the desire to gain experience with children. They provide details of their suitability by citing their background as the oldest child in a family, and they explain how they would spend their free time exploring nature, history, and the geography of Australia. All parts of the prompt are addressed with relevant ideas, placing the response comfortably at Band 6.5 to Band 7.0. To reach higher bands, the ideas could be extended with more specific detail regarding the child's daily needs or the exact types of historical places they wish to visit.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter maintains a clear overall progression from the opening statement to the closing remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the introduction, the reasons for wanting the job, suitability, and free-time plans. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. However, 'On the other hand' is used incorrectly here, as the ideas are contrasting in a logical progression rather than presenting a true opposition. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraphing could be slightly more refined to ensure seamless transitions between ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning. The student attempts some less common phrasing, such as 'pursuing my graduation' and 'geographical aspects'. However, there is a spelling error ('oppurtunity' instead of 'opportunity') and some slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'basic education' in reference to a six-year-old child, or 'the oldest child in my family i already have experience'. While communication is never impeded, these inaccuracies and occasional awkward collocations prevent the response from reaching Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'as I am pursuing my graduation' and 'when it comes to spending the leisure time'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as lowercase 'i', capitalization errors, and slightly tangled clause structures (e.g., 'as I am pursuing my graduation in teaching so this would be...'). Despite these flaws, the errors do not impede communication, and the writer shows a reasonable degree of control over basic and intermediate sentence patterns.
