Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

My name is Simran. I am writing this letter regarding the endorsement I read in the magazine for babysitting a six-year-old child.

I would like to get this job because I am currently in search of a job to manage my overhead expenses. As an international student, it is becoming hard for me to handle the financial burden. Lastly, I have experience handling kids extremely well as I used to babysit my nephew for 3 long years.

In my opinion, I would be the best fit for this job due to the reason that I have done Early childhood management course for 2 years. In the final year, we used to take care of the child in daycares.

I spend my free time doing my favourite things, such as going out to malls and parks, clicking pictures of my favourite places,as photography is my passion.

I would really appreciate it if you could provide me a chance. I will be waiting for your response.

Yours faithfully,

kashish.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the reason for wanting the job is explained through the need to manage overhead expenses as an international student. Second, suitability is detailed by mentioning babysitting experience with a nephew and completion of an early childhood management course. Third, free time activities are outlined, such as visiting malls, parks, and doing photography. However, there is a contradiction in the salutation and sign-off: the prompt specifies beginning with 'Dear Sir or Madam,' and using 'Yours faithfully,' but the candidate addresses the letter to 'Dear sir,' and signs off as 'kashish,' while also referring to themselves as 'Simran' in the opening sentence, indicating some confusion in persona. Despite this slight inconsistency in naming, the task purpose is fully met and ideas are adequately extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is generally coherent and follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a distinct bullet point from the prompt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, reasons for applying, suitability, free time plans, and conclusion. However, cohesive devices are somewhat basic and mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Lastly' is used rather abruptly to introduce the second point in the second paragraph, and referencing is occasionally weak, such as 'we used to take care of the child' where the antecedent is slightly blurred. Despite these minor cohesive flaws, the overall progression of information is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general task, using terms such as 'financial burden,' 'overhead expenses,' and 'passion.' There are attempts at less common lexical items like 'endorsement' (though misused here instead of 'advertisement') and 'Early childhood management course.' Some word choices are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'endorsement' for an advertisement and 'managing my overhead expenses' for personal living costs. Spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly in the band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'As an international student, it is becoming hard for me to handle the financial burden.' There is good control over basic grammar, and punctuation is generally correct. However, there are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'due to the reason that I have done Early childhood management course' (missing article 'an' and overly wordy construction) and 'provide me a chance' instead of 'provide me with a chance.' Complex structures are attempted with mixed success, but errors rarely impede understanding.
