Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter because I have seen an advertisement in Australian magazine, that you are looking for someone to live with a family for six months and look after your six-year-old child and I think I am perfect for this job.
Firstly, as I have an experience in teaching and handling children of almost three years, in my home country. Not only this, I personally have interest in spending time with children and taking care of them. Also, I was looking for an appartment to live, and you are offering to live with a family, that would be best opportunity for me.
Furthermore, I am recently doing course of child care, so I don't only have the practical knowledge but also have the theortical. And, it will also beneficial for you and for me as well, because you will have someone who already have an experience and knowledge.
Moreover, as I am a student, usually I do not have free time because of studies, but still if I have some spare time I like to spend it by reading books or spending it alone. I would be the perfect choice for this job as I will give my 100 percentage to this job.
Yours faithfully,
Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all three parts of the task prompt. The letter clearly explains why the writer would like the job (such as the need for an apartment and interest in childcare), provides details of suitability including three years of teaching experience and a current childcare course, and outlines how free time would be spent reading books or having alone time. The tone is appropriate for a formal application letter. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, meeting all requirements of the prompt effectively. Although some points like free time are brief, they are fully covered and the overall response satisfies the task criteria solidly, earning a band score of 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is coherent overall and follows a logical structure. The writer uses standard letter-writing conventions and organises the content into paragraphs, moving from the purpose of the letter to personal background, qualifications, and finally free-time activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'Also', and 'Moreover' are employed to link ideas, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in their positioning. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, such as separating the childcare course from the free-time discussion. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional minor clumsiness in sentence flow keeps this criterion at a band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases like 'practical knowledge', 'theoretical', and 'perfect choice' are used appropriately. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'appartment' instead of 'apartment' and awkward phrasing like 'recently doing course' instead of 'recently taking a course'. The range is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning, and while less common items are attempted, inaccuracies in word choice and spelling prevent the score from reaching higher bands. The lexical resource is overall sufficient for a band 6.0 rating.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, for instance using subordinate clauses with 'because' and 'as'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the response, such as 'as I have an experience' (uncountable noun misuse) and 'it will also beneficial' (missing verb 'be'). Punctuation and articles are occasionally misused, such as 'the theortical'. Despite these errors, the sentences are generally understandable and communication is rarely impeded. The control of grammar reflects a solid band 6.0 performance.
