Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding the advertisement which I saw in an Australian magazine about taking care of your six-year-old child. I am interested in this job because I like to spend time with children and I also want to visit Australia.

I think I am suitable for this job because I have some experience of taking care of children. I have a younger brother and I usually take care of him when my parents are busy. I help him with his homework and also prepare food for him. Moreover, I am a responsible person and I know how to handle children. I can also play different games with your child and help him in his studies.

In my free time, I would like to explore Australia and visit different places. I am interested in nature, so I would like to visit beaches and parks. I also want to meet new people and learn about Australian culture. On weekends, I will spend some time travelling around the city.

I hope you will consider me for this job. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Harleen Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting the job by stating that you enjoy spending time with children and wish to visit Australia. You then provide suitable background details, mentioning your hands-on experience looking after your younger brother, helping with homework, and preparing food. Finally, you describe how you would spend your free time by exploring nature, meeting new people, and travelling on weekends. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and all ideas are relevant and adequately developed to fulfil the general training task requirements. Therefore, this fulfills the criteria for a solid performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear and logical organisation from beginning to end. Each of the three body paragraphs corresponds directly to one of the bullet points from the prompt, which makes the letter very easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and standard signposting language such as 'Moreover' and 'In my free time' is deployed effectively to transition between ideas. Pronoun referencing is generally clear and straightforward, ensuring that the relationships between sentences remain cohesive. While the cohesive devices used are somewhat basic rather than flexible, the overall progression of information is smooth and logically sequenced throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary choice is adequate and serves to communicate your message clearly and without ambiguity. You make use of standard functional phrases such as 'regarding the advertisement', 'responsible person', and 'explore Australia'. However, the range of vocabulary tends to be somewhat limited and relies heavily on common, everyday terms like 'take care of' and 'spend time with' rather than demonstrating less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions. There are no notable spelling or word-choice errors, but to reach a higher band, you would need to incorporate a wider and more sophisticated variety of vocabulary suited to a formal or semi-formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good control of grammar and punctuation throughout the letter. The text contains a healthy mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am interested in this job because I like to spend time with children and I also want to visit Australia.' The majority of your sentences are grammatically accurate and well-constructed, with correct subject-verb agreement and appropriate tense usage across past, present, and future timelines. Although you do not attempt a vast array of highly complex or sophisticated grammatical structures, your sentences are clear, error-free, and ensure that communication is completely unimpeded.
