Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in a job that was recently advertised in a magazine. This job suits me because of my interest, qualification and experience. I am graduated in healthcare program in 2024. Later, I started to work as a nanny for the Australian family in Sydney. Sadly, my conract is about to end this month so I am actively looking for an another job.

I am particularly interested in working with children because they makes me feel better. They are innocent, kind and very respectful. I encourage them to play different intellectual games for their personal growth.

I enjoy doing leisure activities in my free time. I often go for a short walk with my dogs to the park where I iniate conversation with strangers . I enjoy watching movies and series with my family on weekends. Sometime I read a books when I feel bored.

Please let me know if you need any further information. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you

Kind regards,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You begin by explaining your interest in the job due to your healthcare background and nanny experience. You provide details of your suitability by discussing your experience working with an Australian family and your passion for children's personal growth through intellectual games. Furthermore, you describe how you spend your free time, mentioning walking your dogs, watching movies, and reading. However, there are some minor tone inconsistencies, such as addressing the letter to 'Dear Sir,' despite the prompt instructing you to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam,' and signing off as Vaibhav instead of maintaining a formal letter convention. Overall, the communication of ideas is clear and fulfills the main requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent and logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a different aspect of the prompt. For instance, the introduction explains your purpose, the second paragraph details your experience and suitability, and the third covers your free time activities. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Later' and 'Sadly', though some transitions feel a bit basic or mechanical. Additionally, referencing is occasionally repetitive, and the paragraphing, while present, could be enhanced with smoother linking between sentences. Overall, the progression of ideas is fairly easy to follow, supporting a solid band six level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message. You use some relevant topic-specific terms such as 'healthcare program', 'nanny', and 'intellectual games'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'conract' (contract), 'an another job', and 'they makes me feel better'. Additionally, phrases like 'iniate conversation' contain spelling slips ('iniate' instead of 'initiate') and awkward spacing. While you attempt some less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in word formation and collocation prevent you from reaching a higher band. Focusing on precision and spelling accuracy will greatly enhance your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using clauses with words like 'because', 'where', and 'when'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I am graduated in healthcare program' (should be 'I graduated from a healthcare program' or 'I hold a degree in'), 'an Australian family' (article usage), and 'Sometime I read a books' (plural/singular mismatch and missing auxiliary/preposition). Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and your meaning remains mostly clear to the reader. To improve, you need to exercise greater control over tense consistency and article usage.
