Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm writing to express my interest in the recent opportunity as advertised in the Australian magazine for someone to live with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child. I'm a professional care-taker and having been in the same field for over a decade now.

Having an experience of over 10 years, I would like you to know more about my skills. During my inital years of working as a care taker of a five year old child in Canada, I gained ample knowledge of what a child requirements are. Moreover, I've also completed a 6 month Child psychological course which adds to my experience. Additionally, I feel that a child needs enough care and attention to help him/her grow and learn about new things. With my excellent level on skill set, I can help the child learn about the rich culture, heritage and traditions of the state. Having said that, since a child likes to play around, i'll be able to teach chess & Sakudo, which will definitely help the child to brainstrom and learn. Hence, I belive I'll be a perfect fit for this position.

Moreover, since I've never been to Australia before, I would also want to have the opportunity to explore the rich culture and diverse cuisines during my free time. Additionaly, since I belive the child will be comfortable around me, I'll possibly help him/her explore Australia, along with me.

Therefore, keeping in regard the level of my experince and expertise to deal with a child, I would like you to consider me for the said opportunity.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr. John Brown

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required in the task instructions. The candidate clearly explains why they want the job (living in Australia, exploring culture and cuisines), gives detailed reasons for why they are suitable (over a decade of experience, a child psychology course, and specific activities like chess), and outlines how they would spend their free time exploring the country. The tone is appropriate for a formal application letter. The ideas are relevant and well-developed throughout the text, meeting all criteria for a Band 7.0 in Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear, logical organisation and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, qualifications, free-time plans, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Hence' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement allows the reader to follow the applicant's background and intentions easily. This performance corresponds to a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0, and a Band 7.0 is awarded for clear logical organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using terms such as 'professional care-taker', 'rich culture, heritage and traditions', and 'diverse cuisines'. There are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'inital' instead of initial, 'care taker' as two words, 'requirements' used awkwardly in 'what a child requirements are', and 'brainstrom' instead of brainstorm. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the vocabulary used is adequate to convey the intended message. This reflects the Band 6.5 range, rounded to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as participial clauses ('Having an experience of over 10 years...') and conditional/temporal clauses. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present, including 'With my excellent level on skill set' (preposition error), 'i'll' (capitalisation error), and 'belive' (spelling). There is also a slight awkwardness in verb tenses like 'having been in the same field for over a decade now.' Despite these errors, the structures do not impede communication, matching the Band 6.0 descriptors well.
