Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to apply for a babysitter job for your child.
There are many reasons why I like to take care of a child. The first reason is that I am very calm and friendly person and I love to play with children. Apart from that, I love to feed them with nutrious food. Moreover, last year I got a chance to spend some time with my nephew. At that time, I have realized that I love to spend time with children.
I would like to explain why I would be a suitable person to employ for this job is I know all chores related to childcare including feeding and bathing. Apart from this, I can do most of the household chores in free time so it would be beneficial for when you were not at home.
Lastly, I would like to mention about my study there. I got admission in a part-time culinary course there in a Australian university. So I can spend my free time over there.
I hope you will consider my application for this job. Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Parker

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate has successfully covered all three bullet points outlined in the task instructions. The letter explains the desire for the job, detailing a love for children and recent experiences. It provides reasons for suitability by mentioning childcare chores and household assistance. Finally, it outlines plans for free time, specifically mentioning a part-time culinary course at an Australian university. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for a formal application. Although some ideas, such as the childcare duties, are slightly basic and could be expanded with more depth, all parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a clear logical organization with distinct paragraphs dedicated to each bullet point from the prompt, showing an overall coherent arrangement. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'Apart from that', 'Apart from this', and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas like reasons for applying, suitability, and free time plans. While referencing and paragraph transitions are functional, the mechanical nature of the cohesive devices prevents the response from achieving a higher band score, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The candidate uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating key concepts such as 'babysitter', 'childcare', and 'culinary course'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'nutrious food' (nutritious) and 'babysitter job' (position as a babysitter). Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success, and spelling slips occur. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding the reader, these errors in word choice and spelling restrict the score to a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. There are several grammatical errors present throughout the text, including tense issues ('At that time, I have realized') and preposition or article errors ('in a Australian university', 'for your child'). Furthermore, awkward syntactic phrasing appears, such as 'I would like to explain why I would be a suitable person to employ for this job is I know...'. Although these errors are noticeable and require some effort to decode, they do not severely impede overall communication, warranting a Band 5.5.
