Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine that you are looking for someone who can live with your family for six months and take care of you six year old child.
I am very intrested in this job, because I used to be a part time tutor in nursery class in my home country where I was dealing with children from age range of 5-10 years. So, I know how to deal with children.
I think this job would be suitable for me because of my work experience. I have learnt lot of things during that time which includes, how to feed the child, how to deal with their mind and many other things. I am the most suitable person who you can trust to take care of your child while you are away.
In my free time, I like to read books about how child care. This book helps me to be responsinble for the children that I am taking care of. It also helps me to stay calm when I am taking care of child, because somtimes they can be naughty and cross their limits, so in that time I stay calm rathar than shouting at them.
Thank you for your time and understaing. Looking forward for you reply.
Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. The candidate explains why they would like the job, noting their previous experience as a part-time tutor. They give details of why they are suitable by mentioning practical childcare skills such as feeding and managing children's behavior. Additionally, they outline how they spend their free time, specifically reading childcare books to improve their approach. The tone is mostly appropriate for a semi-formal application letter, though the greeting uses 'Dear sir or Madam,' rather than matching the advertisement prompt precisely. Ideas are clearly expressed and relevant, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a clear logical organization with distinct paragraphs for each part of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'I am very interested in this job, because...' and 'I think this job would be suitable for me because of my work experience.' However, referencing and transitions can be a bit mechanical and repetitive, especially with phrases like 'how to deal with...' and 'take care of...'. Paragraphing is handled appropriately to separate the introduction, body points, and conclusion. Overall, the message flows well and is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'responsinble' (spelling error) and 'cross their limits'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'intrested' instead of interested, 'lot of things' missing an article, and 'understaing' instead of understanding. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear throughout the text. The range is sufficient to convey the intended message, but lexical control needs improvement for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I have learnt lot of things during that time which includes...' and 'this book helps me to stay calm when I am taking care of child...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including 'take care of you six year old child' (possessive error) and 'in that time I stay calm rathar than shouting at them'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but minor grammatical inaccuracies occur frequently without fully impeding overall communication.
