Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for a job to spend next six months with your children and stay with your family.
I am currently enrolled at the University of Sydney in the psychology department. I am an international student here and have a summer break in few months and also this job will help to strengthen my professional profile. Moreover, I always admired spending time with children and study their behaviour.
I believe I am the perfect candidate for this role because I was working as a teacher for three years in India. Where I developed my skills in studying children psychology and engaging ways to inter-act with children to teach them vocabulory and sports.
I spend my leisure time by engaging in different activities to keep my mental and physical health sharp. I do running early in the morning followed by playing sports at community center in the evening. I have joined a bicycle group and we do early morning rides on weekends.
I would therefore request you to review my application. I have attached my resume and reference letter. Should you require more details or information, I am happy to assist you further.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Yours faithfully,
Neel Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the prompt well. You clearly explain why you would like the job by mentioning your current university studies in psychology and how the role will strengthen your professional profile. You give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ by highlighting your three years of teaching experience in India and your background in child psychology. Additionally, you successfully describe how you would spend your free time in Australia by detailing your morning runs, community center sports, and weekend bicycle group rides. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and all bullet points are adequately extended and supported. Therefore, this fulfills the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose corresponding to the bullet points in the prompt. You use appropriate cohesive devices to connect your ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'I would therefore request you'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, starting with a standard greeting, moving through well-structured body paragraphs, and ending with an appropriate sign-off. While the transitional flow is mostly smooth, occasional mechanical links prevent it from reaching the highest bands. Overall, the structural progression is very clear, earning a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using phrases like 'enrolled at the University of Sydney', 'professional profile', and 'leisure time'. However, there are a few lexical and spelling errors that prevent a higher score. For example, you wrote 'in few months' instead of 'in a few months', 'vocabulory' instead of 'vocabulary', and 'inter-act' as a hyphenated word instead of 'interact'. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'study their behaviour' which could be 'observe their behaviour'. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the letter, such as 'I am currently enrolled at the University of Sydney in the psychology department' and 'Should you require more details or information, I am happy to assist you further.' There are some noticeable grammatical errors, such as tense usage ('I was working' instead of 'I worked') and sentence fragments like 'Where I developed my skills...', which should be joined to the previous clause. Punctuation and minor structural slips occur, but they rarely impede communication. Because you successfully employ a mix of structures alongside frequent error-free sentences, this performance aligns well with Band 6.5.
