Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for a job to spend next six months with your children and to stay with your family.
I am currently enrolled at the University of Sydney in the psychology department. I am an international student here and have a summer break in few months. This job will help me to secure jobs in Australian education institute. Moreover, I always admired spending time with children and to study their behaviour.
I believe I am the perfect candidate for this role because I was working as a teacher for three years in India. Where I developed my skills in studying children psychology and multiple engaging ways to interact with children to teach them vocabulory and sports.
I spend my leisure time by engaging in different activities to keep my mental and physical health sharp. I do running early in the morning followed by playing sports at community center in the evening. I have joined a bicycle group and we do early morning rides on weekends.
I would therefore request you to review my application. I have attached my resume and reference letter. Should you require more details or information, I am happy to assist you further.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Yours faithfully,
Neel Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all parts of the task prompt. You clearly explained why you want the job by mentioning your studies in psychology at the University of Sydney and your upcoming summer break. You provided details of your suitability by highlighting your three years of teaching experience in India and your background in children's psychology. Furthermore, you outlined how you would spend your free time through running, sports at the community centre, and weekend bicycle rides. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application, and your ideas are relevant and well-developed. However, your opening sentence contains a slight inaccuracy, referring to 'your children' whereas the advertisement specifies looking after a 'six-year-old child' (singular). This is a very minor omission, but to achieve a higher band, precision in addressing specific prompt details is essential. Overall, your response covers all bullet points effectively and maintains a clear purpose throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with a standard polite opening and a clear statement of purpose, move systematically through your reasons for applying, your background, and your leisure activities, and conclude with a professional sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct theme, such as your university background, work experience, and free-time hobbies. Cohesive devices are generally used well, with transition words like 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Should you require' helping to guide the reader smoothly through the text. However, referencing is occasionally slightly loose, such as the fragment 'Where I developed my skills', which should be connected to the previous sentence rather than standing as a separate sentence fragment. Despite this minor mechanical flaw, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for this task with some attempt to use less common items, such as 'enrolled', 'international student', 'psychology department', and 'leisure time'. There are, however, a few word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score. For example, you write 'in few months' instead of 'in a few months', 'education institute' instead of 'educational institution', and 'vocabulory' contains a spelling error. Additionally, 'children psychology' should be 'child psychology' or 'children's psychology'. While these errors do not impede communication, they show that your control of less common vocabulary lacks full precision. Strengthening your collocation and checking your spelling will help elevate your lexical score in future writing tasks.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'Should you require more details or information, I am happy to assist you further.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present throughout the text. For instance, you write 'spend next six months' omitting the definite article 'the', and 'was working' would be better expressed as the simple past 'worked' or present perfect 'have worked' given your completed past experience. Furthermore, there is a punctuation error with a missing space and incorrect sentence boundary after 'few months. This job', and the sentence starting with 'Where I developed' is a sentence fragment. Despite these recurring errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and your sentence structures remain generally understandable.
