Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for a job to spend the next six months with your children and to stay with your family.

I am currently enrolled at the University of Sydney in the psychology department. I am an international student here and have a summer break upcoming. This job will help me to secure jobs in Australian educational institute. Moreover, I have always admired spending time with children and studying their behaviour.

I believe I am the perfect candidate for this role because I have three years of working experience as a teacher in India. I depened my skills in studying child psychology and developed multiple engaging ways to interact with children to teach them vocabulary and athletic coaching.

I spent my leisure time by participating in different activities to keep my mental and physical health fit. I go running early in the morning followed by playing sports at the community center in the evening. I have joined a bicycle group and we do early morning rides on weekends.

I would therefore request you to review my application. I have attached my resume and reference letter. Should you require more details or information, I am happy to assist you further.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Neel Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points specified in the prompt. The writer explains why they would like the job, noting they are currently a psychology student and wish to gain experience in Australian educational institutes while studying child behavior. Details of suitability are well provided, mentioning three years of teaching experience in India and skills in child psychology. Additionally, the writer clearly states how they would spend their free time, detailing physical activities like running, playing sports at a community center, and joining a bicycle group. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application, and all parts of the task are fully addressed, earning a band score of 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, moving naturally from the purpose of the letter to the applicant's background, then to leisure activities, and finally to a polite call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately and effectively throughout. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and appropriate referencing are utilised, although some transitional phrasing could be slightly smoother. Overall, the arrangement of ideas is coherent and easy to follow, justifying a band score of 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for a job application, including terms like 'psychology department', 'international student', and 'community center'. There are some successful attempts at less common lexical items, though a few awkward word choices or minor errors occur, such as 'depened' instead of 'depended' or 'deepened', and 'health fit' instead of 'physically fit'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey meaning clearly and precisely, allowing the reader to understand the candidate's qualifications without strain. This performance aligns well with the criteria for band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures effectively (e.g., 'I believe I am the perfect candidate for this role because I have three years of working experience...'). There are some grammatical errors and typographical slips, notably 'I depened my skills' and missing articles or preposition choices. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate while complex structures show good control. The overall grammatical range and accuracy are consistent with a band 6.5 rating.
