Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter in regards of the commercial that I have seen in an Australian magazine about the job for someone who will be able to stay with the family for six months and take care of the child. Since, I have a two years degree in early childhood, I believe I would be suitable person for this position.
Although I have completed my studies last month and I have also accomplished my training hours I am all set to pursue for a full-time position. Since, I am fully familiar about the child's morning to night routine, I have also attended CPR sessions for the emergency situations.
When I am on my break I would like to spend some time with the child. I can take the child to the park and do some activities like playing games or I can read a book to the child or I can do some help with the light homework. I would be grateful for the opportunity to learn about your family.
I will be happy to provide the documents required.
Yours faithfully,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all bullet points outlined in the task instructions. The student explains why they would like the job by mentioning their interest in the family and their early childhood degree. They provide suitable details regarding their qualifications, such as completed training hours and CPR sessions. However, there is a minor misinterpretation in the third bullet point regarding how free time in Australia would be spent; the student describes activities they would do with the child during work breaks rather than how they would spend their own personal free time exploring or living in Australia. Despite this slight misunderstanding, all parts of the prompt are addressed with relevant ideas, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a clear overall progression and follows a logical structure typical of a formal correspondence, beginning with an appropriate salutation and ending with a sign-off. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct ideas, such as qualifications and duties. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of transition words like 'Since' at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'Since, I have a two years degree...' and 'Since, I am fully familiar...'). Referencing is mostly clear, but the logical flow between sentences could be smoother with a wider variety of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and topic-specific terms like 'early childhood' and 'training hours'. However, there are noticeable word choice errors and unnatural phrasings, such as writing 'in regards of the commercial' instead of 'with regard to the advertisement'. Other minor lexical slips occur, including 'suitable person' missing an article and 'pursue for' containing an unnecessary preposition. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. There are several error-free sentences, particularly in the final paragraph. However, persistent grammatical errors occur throughout the text, such as unnecessary comma splices after introductory transition words ('Since, I have...') and incorrect noun modifiers like 'two years degree' instead of 'two-year degree'. Furthermore, prepositional errors such as 'do some help' instead of 'help' detract from grammatical accuracy. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the response firmly at band 6.0.
