Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. & Mrs. John,
I am writing to express my keen interest in the job that you have advert in an Australian magazine to live with your family for the period of six months and to take care of your six-year-old kid.
I like to spend most of my time with kids and I understand their needs very well. Additionally, I not only look after the kids but also engage them in logical and mind activities such as playing puzzles and words games, fitness games such as playing zumba while dancing and many more which is actually crucial for their overall personality development.
I have overall 12 years of experience as a nanny and I do not have any criminal background. I can give you reference numbers of all my clients which I took care of childs over the time. I believe in maintaing long-term relationships with all the clients and I respect their privacy.
I have been living in Australia for the past 15 years and I know many places to explore and spend my free time. Moreover, I am also an active learner who always try to add new skills in my personality. Currently, I am taking online classes of learning French and I will spend my spare time working on this language.
Please feel free to contact me in case you have any query. Looking forward to hear from you.
Thank you,
Edie

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing why you want the job, your suitability through experience, and how you plan to spend your free time in Australia. However, some areas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the explanation of how you would spend your free time mentions taking French classes, but this point remains somewhat under-developed compared to the detailed description of your childcare activities. The letter starts with an inappropriate salutation ('Dear Mr. & Mrs. John' instead of matching the prompt's instruction to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam'), which slightly affects the appropriate tone for a formal advertisement response, but the core communicative purpose of the task is still achieved.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the purpose of writing to your experience and finally your plans for free time. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, creating a logical structure. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive in the way sentences are linked, such as the overuse of simple additive connectors ('Additionally', 'Moreover') and referencing errors, like 'which I took care of childs over the time', where the pronoun referencing does not flow naturally. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct themes, but the overall flow would benefit from a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect ideas more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is attempted for the task, including phrases like 'overall personality development' and 'maintain long-term relationships'. However, there are noticeable lexical and word-choice errors that stem from attempts at less common vocabulary. For example, using 'advert' instead of 'advertised', 'mind activities' instead of 'mental activities', 'words games' instead of 'word games', and spelling 'maintaing' instead of 'maintaining'. Additionally, 'childs' is a form error. These vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies do not prevent communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in word formation and collocation to reach a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and complex ideas, such as in 'I not only look after the kids but also engage them in logical and mind activities...'. However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text. Examples include tense and verb form issues like 'always try to add' (should be 'always tries'), 'Looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing'), and prepositional or structural slips such as 'online classes of learning French' (should be 'classes in learning French' or 'French classes'). Punctuation and article use also contain minor slips, though these errors rarely impede the overall meaning of your message.
