Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I came across the advertisement in magazine this morning. You are in search for a responsible person who can look after your kid for six months. I am willing to do this responsibility as I have encountered few similar experiences. I am capable to handle a child and help in their parents absence.
I am confident to apply for this beacuse while I was in London for my master studies, I used to stay with a family of two children. I used to look after them while their parents were away. Secondly, I had a similar experience in my hometown New Jersey where I had to take care for a kid of age similar to yours.
I am going to live in Australia with my uncles for an year. I will be spending time with my cousins in free time and explore the famous areas of city. In between , I can have enough time to look after your child.
I hope you find me suitable for this job as caretaker.
Yours obediently,
Muzdalfa Zain

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, covering the three bullet points adequately. You explain why you want the job by mentioning your desire to look after the child, give details of your suitability through your past childcare experiences in London and New Jersey, and outline your plans for your free time with your relatives and exploring the city. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, particularly regarding how you would balance your personal schedule with your duties as a live-in caretaker. To move to a higher level, you would need to extend and fully develop your ideas with greater depth and specific supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the purpose of the letter to your background, and finally your free time plans. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main point, and the opening and closing conventions are standard. However, the cohesion feels somewhat mechanical at times, relying on basic transitions like 'Secondly' and 'In between', and some referencing lacks complete clarity. To achieve a higher score, you should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'responsible person', 'caretaker', and 'encounter', but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, prepositional collocations, and phrasing, such as writing 'in magazine this morning' instead of 'in a magazine' or 'help in their parents absence' instead of 'in their parents' absence'. Spelling is generally clear, but word choice errors prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on precise collocations and a more natural control of less common lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating that you can construct compound ideas such as 'I used to look after them while their parents were away.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('in magazine'), incorrect prepositions ('take care for a kid' instead of 'take care of'), and minor tense or agreement slips. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your meaning. To reach a higher standard, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over prepositions and article usage.
