Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to show my interest to live with your family and look after your child. I recently moved here, therefore living with your family would help me to prevent homesickness and loneliness.

Apart from this, I am a register physiotherapist back home. Additionally, I completed my masters in pediatrics. Hence, I can measure all the milestone carefully and bring attention if something is missed. Moreover, I may help your kid to improve cognitive and learning behaviours by adding many play exercise. So, it could improve the growth.

Furthermore, kids can learn many thiings from outer environment therefore, in my leisure time I would love to bring your kid to the nearest park or garden with your permission. This can improve her communication.

Thank you so much for your time and understanding. I will wait to hear back some positive news.

Regards,

Riya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task prompt, including explaining the motivation for the job, detailing suitability through professional background, and describing how leisure time would be spent. The ideas are relevant and generally clear, fulfilling the requirements for the lower band while showing glimpses of the higher band through relevant and practical suggestions. However, some areas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of how free time would be spent with the child could be extended further to show a fully elaborated plan. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for an application to a family.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, making use of standard formal letter conventions. Paragraphing is employed to separate distinct points, such as professional suitability and leisure time plans. Cohesive devices are used throughout the text, such as "Apart from this," "Additionally," and "Moreover," though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in nature. Information flows logically from one paragraph to the next, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the applicant's line of thought.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to communicate ideas effectively. The writer attempts some less common and topic-specific vocabulary, such as "physiotherapist," "pediatrics," "milestone," and "cognitive." However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and word choice errors, such as writing "register physiotherapist" instead of "registered physiotherapist," "bring attention" instead of "draw attention," and spelling "thiings" with an extra letter. These minor errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the constraints typical of this band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and complex sentences using connectors like "therefore" and "because." There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, such as "show my interest to live" instead of "show my interest in living," and "by adding many play exercise" instead of "exercises." Punctuation and verb tenses are generally handled well enough to ensure meaning is clear, and errors are infrequent enough that they rarely impede communication, aligning with the expected profile.
