Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this for an advertisement I recently saw in an Australian magazine regarding a job to look after six-year old child.

I would be very interested in this position because I love spending time with children and would like to experience family life in Australia. Living with you would also give me the opportunity to learn about Australian culture while contributing to your child's daily routine.

I believe I would be suitable candidate for the role. I have experience of looking after young children including helping them with reading, teaching light meal preparation and organizing activities. I am patient and dependable, and i understand parent's instruction and concerns regarding their child safety. I also encourage children to learn through playing games.

In my free time, I like to explore the local communities, shops, parks, and beaches to improve my knowledge. At the weekends, I like to take a short trip to the near cities to explore new cafes and tourist spots.

I would like to provide you further information about myself and experience. I look forward to your prompt response.

Kind regards,

John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully addressed all the bullet points required in the task prompt. You clearly explained why you want the job by mentioning your love for children and your desire to experience Australian culture. You also provided relevant details about your suitability, such as your experience with reading and meal preparation. Finally, you outlined how you would spend your free time exploring local communities and taking trips to nearby cities. Your ideas are well-supported and clearly relevant to the context of the advertisement. To achieve an even higher score, you could extend these ideas further by providing more specific examples of activities you have organized in the past or elaborating on particular aspects of Australian culture that interest you, ensuring every point receives equal and comprehensive development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the opening statement to your motivation, suitability, free-time plans, and finally a polite closing. You used paragraphing appropriately to separate each main idea, and your overall arrangement is coherent. While the organization works well, you could make your cohesive devices even more flexible and varied. For instance, relying slightly more on advanced transitional phrases between your sentences would create a more fluid connection. Currently, referencing is generally clear, but ensuring that pronouns and cohesive markers link sentences even more tightly would elevate the flow of your writing to the next level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms related to childcare and daily routines, such as 'daily routine', 'dependable', and 'organizing activities'. You also attempted some less common vocabulary, such as 'explore the local communities' and 'tourist spots'. However, there are some minor word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as omitting an article in 'for an advertisement' instead of 'in response to an advertisement', writing 'six-year old child' without an article, and a lower-case 'i' in the sentence 'i understand parent's instruction'. To reach a higher lexical band, you should aim to use a wider variety of sophisticated phrasing with greater precision, while paying closer attention to pluralization, possessive apostrophes, and article usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You showed a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over standard structures. For example, you successfully combined clauses using subordinating conjunctions like 'because' and 'while'. Your grammar and punctuation are generally clear and do not impede communication. However, some minor errors persist, such as missing articles ('suitable candidate' instead of 'a suitable candidate'), prepositional slips ('experience of looking after' where 'experience in' is more natural), and minor punctuation issues like the uncapitalized pronoun 'i'. To move further into the higher band territory, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater precision in article usage and prepositions within grammatical patterns.
