Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I hope this email finds you well.

I am writing to apply for the poistion of care giver you have advertised in the australian magazine for the duration of six month. I was really intrested in the position and would truly appreciate if considered for the position.

I am working in this field for the past 15 years. I have a vast experience working with todlers and small children understanding thier needs, helping them learn good manners, creating a positive safe environment for them to grow and learn. I enjoy building good relations with chidren and build them emotionally and socially strong.

Furthermore, I am a very relaible person when you leave the kid to me you can expect full attention from me toward all the kids care for. I communicate well to all the children and thier parents to maintain a healthy relationship. Also, I am willing to adapt to the different routine and special attention if required to a child.

Moreover, I would like to spent my free time looking after you child and giving him the best treatment you are expecting to get for your child. In terms of my availability I would remain free all on the week days, However, on sundays I have to attend church with my friends so I wont be able to work on that day.

I hope you will consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Sankalp Diwate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only partially, resulting in a minimal and somewhat tangential approach to the prompt requirements. While the writer manages to touch upon why they would like the job and mentions a background in childcare, the response fails to properly address the third bullet point regarding how free time would be spent in Australia. Instead of discussing leisure activities, travel, or hobbies, the writer states, 'Moreover, I would like to spent my free time looking after you child,' which misunderstands the concept of free time and fails to answer the prompt accurately. Furthermore, the confusion regarding the working schedule, where weekdays are claimed as 'free' yet meant for childcare followed by a conflict on Sundays, creates a lack of clarity in how the position's duties are understood. To improve, the writer must ensure every bullet point is fully and accurately interpreted and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter displays some basic organization with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, experience, reliability, free time, and conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical flow between some of the ideas. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, and occasionally inaccurate, such as the frequent reliance on transitional markers like 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover' at the start of paragraphs, which feel mechanical rather than naturally integrated. Referencing is also sometimes unclear, as seen in the pronoun usage when discussing the children and parents. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structuring of sentences within paragraphs lacks smooth transitions. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next without abrupt shifts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word formation that occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. There are several spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'poistion', 'australian' (uncapitalized), 'intrested', 'todlers', 'thier', 'chidren', 'relaible', and 'spent'. Additionally, word choices and collocations show awkwardness, such as 'build them emotionally and socially strong' instead of helping them develop emotionally and socially, or using 'treatment' when referring to childcare. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, the high frequency of lexical slips prevents the response from achieving a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling, learn correct collocations for common phrases, and expand their range of functional vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response utilizes a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few basic complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb tenses, such as 'I am working in this field for the past 15 years' instead of the present perfect continuous tense, and agreement errors like 'all the kids care for' instead of 'all the kids cared for'. Punctuation errors are also notable, including comma splices and incorrect sentence boundaries, such as 'However, on sundays I have to attend church with my friends so I wont be able to work on that day.' These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures, ensure accurate verb tense usage, and improve punctuation and article usage.
