Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully explaining why you want the job, detailing your suitability, and describing how you would spend your free time. However, some areas are developed more fully than others. For instance, the explanation of your suitability through your early childhood education background is well covered, but the explanation regarding your free time focuses mainly on having a weekend off to see family and friends rather than broader activities you might enjoy in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and all bullet points from the prompt are covered, fitting comfortably into the expectations for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, using standard conventions such as 'Dear Sir or Madam' and 'Yours Sincerely'. Paragraphing is used to separate different ideas, moving logically from your interest in the role to your qualifications and finally your free time plans. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or faulty. Certain linking words and transitional phrases, such as 'Therby', 'Therefore', and 'Inorder', are misused or incorrectly combined with punctuation, which affects the smooth progression of ideas. Referencing and paragraph transitions could be strengthened to make the flow more natural throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully conveying your meaning to the reader. You make noticeable attempts to use less-common lexical items related to childcare and employment, such as 'certified early childhood educator', 'specialization', and 'distinction'. However, there are several spelling, word choice, and word form errors that occasionally distract, such as 'care taker' instead of 'caretaker', 'minututes', 'unecessary', 'qualifactions', and 'renowed' instead of 'renowned'. Despite these slips, communication is not severely impeded, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient to handle the communicative requirements of the prompt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and participial phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical issues include article omissions and verb agreement errors, such as 'interest in role of a care taker' missing an article, '6 year child' instead of '6-year-old child', and 'an experienced candidate who have worked' where the verb does not agree with its antecedent. Additionally, punctuation around conjunctions and introductory phrases needs better control. A broader mix of error-free complex sentences and more precise punctuation would elevate this aspect.
