Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

Myself Himanshi Patel. The main purpose for my letter is to apply for a position which I have seen in an Australian magazine about to live six months with your family and to take care of your six-year-old child.

I would like to do this job because I already have an experience in handling a child. Apart from that I love to spend time with children a lot, therefore it is easy for me to understand them.

Moreover, I have completed my masters degree in a child care management course. I know each and every details of how to handle children aged between new born to sixteen years old.

Since childhood I have dream to visit Australia for a once. Therefore, if I have a chance to come over there with a job, then in a free time I would like to visit many famous places and learn about the Australian culture.

I would kindly appreciate your consideration in this matter and anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering why the candidate would like the job, why she is suitable, and how she plans to spend her free time in Australia. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. While the explanation regarding her background in childcare is fairly clear, her plans for free time and reasons for wanting the job are touched upon rather briefly and could have been extended with more specific detail. The letter format is generally appropriate, and the purpose of the communication is easily understood throughout the piece.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas, moving logically from the purpose of the letter to her qualifications and finally to her future plans. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'Apart from that', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore', though referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, which prevents the text from reaching a higher band. Overall, the flow of information is easy to follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate her message effectively. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary and topic-specific phrasing, such as 'child care management' and 'cultural', but these are accompanied by word-choice and collocation errors. For instance, phrases like 'an experience' (instead of 'experience') and 'each and every details' show limitations in lexical precision. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly concerning articles, prepositions, and singular/plural agreement, as seen in 'Myself Himanshi Patel', 'for a once', and 'in a free time'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and they rarely impede communication. The punctuation is generally handled well, supporting the overall readability of the letter.
