Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. Recently, I saw an advertisement in an Australian magazine for baby sitting. I really want that job because I have good experience in this job from past three years and I also love children so much.
I am really a suitable person for this opportunity because two years ago I completed baby care course and did voluntary work in childcare home and won a gold medal for my performance. Another reason why you choose me is that my patience levels is really high and easily handle any kind of situation.
Additionally, when I have some leisure time i love to spend with brother's babies as they really love me.
I hope for a positive response from your side.
Your faithfully,
Sunpreet Kaur

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Coherence and Cohesion | 6.0 |
| Lexical Resource | 5.0 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 5.5 |
| Overall | 5.0 |
Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally, and importantly, it fails to meet the minimum length requirement, falling short of the required 150 words by 20 words. While all three bullet points from the prompt are touched upon briefly, the ideas are under-developed and lack sufficient detail. For example, the explanation of how you would spend your free time in Australia is extremely brief and slightly confused, mentioning spending time with 'brother's babies' rather than addressing what you would do during your leisure time in the country. To improve for the next band, you must write at least the minimum word count and fully develop each point with extended, relevant explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable letter structure, opening with a standard greeting and closing appropriately. Ideas are generally grouped logically, with each paragraph addressing a different aspect of the prompt, such as your reasons for applying and your qualifications. However, referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or basic, such as the repetitive use of 'and' and 'also'. Paragraphing could also be managed more effectively to separate ideas clearly. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic messages, utilizing terms like 'advertisement', 'opportunity', and 'voluntary work'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as writing 'childcare home' instead of 'children's home' or 'orphanage', and writing 'from past three years' instead of 'for the past three years'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the overall lexical range restricts the precision of your writing. To lift this criterion to the next band, you need to use a wider range of less common vocabulary with better awareness of natural collocations and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your sentence structures show a mix of simple forms and attempted complex sentences, but the range remains limited. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause some difficulty for the reader, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'my patience levels is really high' and missing articles or incorrect prepositions. Punctuation is generally basic, and sentence boundaries can be abrupt. To move up to a higher band, you need to demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors by checking your verb forms and agreements carefully.
