Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the six-month childcare position advertised in the daily magazine, I am really interested and would love to live with you and look after your child.

I have been working in this field of looking after young children from the past seven years, I truly love caring of children and developing a friendly bond with them. Moreover, I have worked as a child care specialis and my responsibilities have included preparing meals, helping children with homework and organising age-appropriate activities, my experience and past knowledge will be a valuable asset for this job.

During my free time, I will be travelling around the coastal areas in the southern Australian region. I really like surfing and other water sports. I hope to visit the jungle areas of New South Wales as well. I will be attaching my CV for your reference and would eagerly wait for your positive reply.

Yours faithfully,

Vishav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain your interest in childcare, describe relevant experience and duties, and outline plans for your free time in Australia. The seven years of experience and examples such as preparing meals and helping with homework make your suitability relevant. The response also uses an appropriate application-letter format. However, some points are less fully developed: you do not explain specifically why living with this family or working in Australia appeals to you, and your leisure plans are listed rather than expanded. Add a brief personal reason for applying and a little detail about how you would balance travel and water sports with the family arrangement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: application and interest, childcare experience, then free-time plans and a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader identify these stages, and phrases such as “Moreover” and “During my free time” signal transitions. Some connections are less controlled, however. The opening joins two complete ideas with a comma, while the experience paragraph packs several duties and claims into one long sentence, making the progression feel crowded. The final paragraph also moves quickly from travel plans to the CV and request for a reply. Use clearer sentence boundaries and separate the practical application details from your leisure plans to make the organisation more flexible and polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the purpose, including relevant terms such as “age-appropriate activities,” “responsibilities,” and “valuable asset.” These choices help communicate your childcare background, and the reader can understand your plans. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, though: “caring of children” would be more idiomatic as “caring for children,” and “jungle areas” is an unclear description of the places you hope to visit. There is also a spelling error in “specialis.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling; more precise descriptions of your experience and destinations would add flexibility without making the letter sound overly formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “responsibilities have included preparing meals…” and the coordinated list of duties. Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. For example, the opening uses a comma to join two independent clauses, and the experience sentence similarly runs several clauses together. “From the past seven years” also uses an unsuitable time expression; write “for the past seven years.” Review sentence boundaries, tense consistency, and prepositions in common patterns. Breaking long sentences into shorter units would improve accuracy while preserving the range you already attempt.
