IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine for someone to live with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child.
Write a letter to the parents. In your letter
- explain why you would like the job
- give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ
- say how you would spend your free time while you are in Australia
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you about my interest in the job opportunity you posted in an Australian magazine recently.
I am available to look after your six-year old as I am quite good with the children, and was running a day-care in my home country. In addition, I will also have a semester break during that time so it is very feasible for me to work for you.
I must tell you that I have a diploma in child care and development. I can break down their day in so many physical and mental activities which will help in their congnitive skills. I am also very concerned about the food they eat as a balanced diet is very crucial in early childhood years.
As far as the free time is concerned, I can take your child to different soft-plays in the local area. I can also take them to several play-dates that are happening in small groups around the community. This is very important for childrens communication skills. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Mahrukh Ali

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in the role, describe relevant childcare experience and qualifications, and suggest activities during your free time. The diploma and previous day-care work are particularly relevant reasons to employ you. However, the explanation of why you want the job is brief, focusing mainly on your availability and suitability rather than your motivation. The free-time section also shifts toward activities for the child, such as soft-play visits and play-dates, rather than explaining how you would spend your own free time in Australia. Develop these points more directly—for example, mention personal interests or places you hope to explore—and the letter will cover the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement, with separate paragraphs for your interest and availability, your qualifications, and activities. The sequence is easy to follow, and phrases such as “In addition” and “As far as the free time is concerned” help signal transitions. However, the final paragraph does not clearly distinguish your own leisure plans from activities you would organise for the child, so the connection to the task is less clear. Some linking is also mechanical, with several sentences beginning “I” or “I can.” Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each idea explicit to improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “diploma in child care and development,” “balanced diet,” and “cognitive skills.” These choices communicate relevant childcare knowledge. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “break down their day in so many physical and mental activities” and “soft-plays”; “day-care” and “play-dates” also need more natural phrasing in this context. There are spelling errors in “congnitive” and “childrens,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling carefully. For instance, describe planning a child’s day around varied activities, and refer to local indoor play centres or organised playdates.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as I am quite good with the children” and the relative clause in “which will help in their cognitive skills.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following your message. Some grammatical choices need attention: “I am available … and was running a day-care” shifts tense awkwardly, while “your six-year old” should be formed as a compound modifier. In “I can also take them,” the pronoun reference is not fully clear after “your child.” Review tense consistency, hyphenation, and clear pronoun agreement, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
