Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Madam,

Writing this letter after watching advertisement being published in magazine to look after your six-year old child.

I am interested in this job as I need a job. I am a University student and I have classes only 3 days in a week. I always free for the remaining 4 days. On top of that, I need a room to live near the University and my University is only 5 minutes walk from your home.

I am currently doing Early Childhood Educator program. So, I know how to deal with a child and involve the kid in a different activites. Morover, I have a keen intersest to spend time with a child. I think I could be the perfect person to look after your child.

Since I moved Australia last year. I would like to spend my leisure time doing useful activities. Such as, going to Gym, cooking different dishes, decorating my room, painting, and listening to music. I do not have bad habits which affect your child.

I hope I will get this job. I am waiting for your reply.

Yours Sincerely,

Raman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in the job, describe your childcare studies and availability, and mention activities you would enjoy in Australia. The details about studying Early Childhood Education and living five minutes from the family’s home are relevant reasons for considering you. However, some points are not fully developed. For example, “I need a job” and needing a room explain your personal circumstances more than the benefits you would bring to the family. Your suitability would be more convincing with a specific example of caring for children or a practical skill, such as planning safe activities. The free-time list is relevant but could be connected more clearly to your experience of Australia.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a generally clear sequence: your reasons for applying, your suitability, and your plans for free time each appear in a separate paragraph. This makes the main information easy to locate. You also use basic links such as “On top of that” and “So” to connect ideas. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or the relationship between sentences is unclear. The opening sentence is a fragment and does not smoothly introduce the purpose of the letter. “Since I moved Australia last year” also does not connect logically to the following list of leisure activities. Use a direct opening and clearer transitions, and make sure each paragraph develops one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “Early Childhood Educator program,” “leisure time,” and “activities.” The reader can understand your reasons for applying and your proposed free-time pursuits. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “activites,” “Morover,” and “intersest.” Some phrases are also unnatural or too general for a formal application: “I need a job” and “I do not have bad habits” do not present your strengths effectively. Choose more specific, professional wording and check spelling carefully. For example, describe your interest in supporting a child’s development rather than simply saying you enjoy spending time with a child.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Your letter includes mostly straightforward sentence patterns, with some attempts to combine ideas using “as,” “and,” and “which.” The main message remains understandable, but grammatical errors occur in several sentences. The opening, “Writing this letter after watching advertisement…,” is not a complete sentence. Other examples include “I always free” instead of “I am always free,” “only 3 days in a week,” and “Since I moved Australia last year,” which has an incomplete clause and a missing preposition. There are also errors in articles and sentence boundaries, such as “going to Gym” and the fragment beginning “Such as.” Practise complete sentences and review articles, verb forms, and prepositions; greater accuracy would make the letter more polished.
