Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding your advertisement about someone to look after your six-years-old child for 6 months. I would like to apply for this job if it is still available.

Firstly, I believe that I am a perfect fit for this job because of my previous experience in raising my younger siblings. Since I am the eldest brother I was responsible for my younger brothers and sisters while our parents were at work, I was preparing simple meals for them and we used to spend so much time playing. It was lovely moments to remember. And it made me realize how much I love to spend time with kids.

While I am now coming to Australia to study, I was searching for part-time job. Based on my experience I won't find suitable job more than yours. I can look after the kid, play with him, moreover I can help him learning a new language and develop his skills through play. Nonetheless, I can accompany him to play dates and tp parks to spend a great playing time.

Finally, I really look forward to visit the great opera house in Sydney during my free time and go for a walk on the beach and engoy the amazing weather of Australia.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Diana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain your interest in childcare, describe caring for your younger siblings, and mention activities you hope to enjoy in Australia. The examples of preparing meals and playing with the children make your suitability relevant, and your enthusiasm is clear. The application purpose is also established at the start. However, some points are less fully developed: you could explain more specifically how your experience would help you care for a six-year-old, and your free-time plans are brief. The reference to studying in Australia gives useful context, but the letter would be stronger if you connected your plans more clearly to the six-month stay and the family’s needs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement, moving from your application and experience to your availability and free-time plans. Paragraphing helps distinguish these topics, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “Finally” make the progression easy to follow. Some linking is mechanical, however, and a few connections are awkward: “Based on my experience I won't find suitable job more than yours” does not clearly link your experience to why this particular role suits you. “Nonetheless” also introduces the play-date and park activities in a way that does not express a contrast. Use simpler, more precise links and make the relationship between each idea explicit to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant phrases such as “look after,” “previous experience,” and “part-time job.” You also attempt more specific language, including “develop his skills through play” and “play dates.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “perfect fit for this job,” “spend a great playing time,” and “look forward to visit.” Spelling slips in “tp” and “engoy” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common childcare and application collocations, and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a time clause beginning “while.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “your six-years-old child” needs a different adjective form, and “I was preparing simple meals” does not fit smoothly with the past-time account. The sentence beginning “Since I am the eldest brother” is a comma splice, while “I look forward to visit” uses the wrong verb pattern. There is also a tense mismatch in “While I am now coming to Australia to study, I was searching.” Review adjective forms, verb patterns after “look forward to,” and consistent tense choices.
