Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writimg to let you know that I have seen your advertisement in the magazine, and I am willing to look after your child for six months.

I would really like to work as a care taker of your child, as I love spending time with children. I believe that spending time with children helps me to overcome my pessimistic thoughts. Moreover, living with an Australian family will provide me an excellent opportunity to learn about the Australian culture and traditions.

Let me tell you about myself. I am a third-year student, enrolled in the Bachelor's in Pediatric Psychology program, at the University of Sydney. My professional knowledge in pediatric behaviour makes me a worthwhile candidate for this job. Furthermore, I have a prior experience of looking after nephews and nieces. My friendly attitude helps me to build a rapport with children very easily. I have a lot of patience and tolerance to keep up with the tantrums of a child.

During my free time in Australia, I prefer to visit museums and national heritage sites. I also like to try different Australian cuisines. Moreover, there is a badminton court in our university where I enjoy playing badminton with my friends.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Yours faithfully,

Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain your interest in caring for children and learning about Australian culture, give relevant qualifications and experience, and describe museums, heritage sites, food and badminton as free-time activities. The details about your pediatric psychology studies and caring for relatives support your suitability, while your friendly manner and patience add a personal dimension. The letter maintains a clear purpose and uses an appropriate opening and closing. To make the response more fully developed, explain more specifically how your studies or experience would help with the child’s everyday care, and clarify the connection between caring for children and overcoming “pessimistic thoughts,” which may not reassure prospective parents. Overall, the required information is present and supported, though a few points could be more directly tailored to the family.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce your application, explain your motivation, present your qualifications, describe your free time, and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these purposes, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “During my free time” make the progression easy to follow. The ideas within each paragraph are generally connected, and the overall tone remains consistent. Some transitions are a little formulaic because several sentences begin with additive linkers; varying these or connecting ideas more directly would make cohesion feel more flexible. For example, the move from your professional knowledge to your experience with relatives could be made more explicit. The organisation is nevertheless logical and clear throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “pediatric behaviour,” “build a rapport,” “patience,” and “national heritage sites.” These choices communicate your qualifications and interests clearly, and some less common expressions show an effort to be precise. A few word choices or collocations are less natural: “care taker” is not the usual term for this role, “provide me an excellent opportunity” would be more idiomatic with “provide me with,” and “Australian cuisines” is awkward when referring generally to food. There is also a spelling slip in “writimg.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would strengthen the overall control and flexibility of your vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “as I love spending time with children” and “while I am in Australia.” Many sentences are accurate and easy to understand, and punctuation and paragraphing are generally controlled. There are a few grammatical issues to refine. In “provide me an excellent opportunity,” the verb pattern requires “provide me with an excellent opportunity.” “I have a prior experience” uses an unnecessary article with the uncountable noun “experience”; write “I have prior experience.” The sentence about being “a third-year student, enrolled…” would read more smoothly without the comma before “enrolled.” These are limited slips rather than persistent problems; greater accuracy in verb patterns and articles would improve an already clear range of structures.
