Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I am writing this letter in response to the advertisement published in an Australian magazine, it is looking for a person to live with a family for six months and need to take care of their six years old kid.

I am expressing an interest in this position because I am looking for a job to survive as an immigrants. Recently, I am enrolled in nursing program. I am looking for a job in which I can gain expereince of dealing with children.

I think I am suitable for this role because I am having an experience of looking after my nephew for few years. Firstly, I am very patient and organized, which is plus point for your child's care. Secondly, I can do other houshold work: cooking, laundry, and grocery shoppping.

Since I am enrolled in 2-year program, I am quite busy with my studies and I can utilize my six-months vacation on doing home care job. As a result, I can gain enough experience for my nursing course.

I am looking for thepositive response from you,

Yours faithfully,

John Steeve

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You address the three requested points: you explain your interest in childcare, mention experience with your nephew and household tasks, and refer to using your vacation while studying in Australia. However, the response only minimally fulfils the purpose of applying for the position. The reason that you need work “to survive as an immigrants” is unclear and does not present a convincing motivation, while your suitability is supported by only brief details. The free-time point is also not fully answered: you explain that you will be busy studying and working, but do not say what you would do in your free time in Australia. Develop each point with relevant, specific information and make your application purpose clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, with separate paragraphs for your interest, suitability and study plans. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “As a result” help show relationships between some ideas. However, progression is limited: the final paragraph focuses on your course and work rather than developing the requested free-time information, and the opening sentence joins two complete ideas with a comma, making the relationship less clear. The closing sentence is also separated from the sign-off in a way that feels abrupt. Use clearer links between the application, your availability and your plans outside work, and ensure each paragraph advances one part of the task.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “position,” “patient,” “organized,” and “experience.” However, the range is limited, and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward, which can make the reader pause. Examples include “survive as an immigrants,” “six years old kid,” “plus point,” and “home care job.” There are also spelling errors such as “expereince,” “houshold,” and “shoppping.” Aim for more natural application-letter expressions and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary for childcare and leisure activities would also help you explain your suitability and plans more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the main message is generally understandable. However, the range of structures is limited, and errors recur in sentence construction, agreement, articles and plurals. For example, the opening joins two independent clauses with only a comma; “I am looking for a job to survive as an immigrants” has an agreement error; and “I am having an experience” uses an unsuitable verb form. “For few years” also needs an article, while “six-months vacation” has an incorrect plural form. Practise accurate sentence boundaries and basic noun phrases, then vary your structures while keeping control of verb forms and agreement.
