Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Rudresh Patel and I am writing this letter in response to the advertisement you posted in Kangaroo magazine. I am currently a student at a university in India. I have decided to take a drop for one year from my course and during that period I will be visiting my elder brother who stays in Perth, the same city where you live.
I was looking for a part-time job of similar kind so that I can afford my expenses of styaing there. Honestly, I think I am very good with handling kids as I have a niece who is almost the same age as your child and she loves spending time with me. Additionally, I can make delightful food and also I am good at tutoring. So, I can help your kid with homework as well.
As I mentioned earlier that I will be visiting my brother, he has a morning job from nine till five in the evening that is when I can look after your child and when mt brother is back from his work I can hang out with him at his place.
Getting this job will be a great oppurtinity for me to learn the Australian culture, hospitality and it will boost my confidence for similar kind of future jobs.
Yours sincerely,
Rudresh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address the main points by explaining that you want work to help cover your stay, describing experience with your niece, and mentioning tutoring and cooking. However, the response only partly fulfils the task: the reason for wanting this particular six-month role is not clearly developed, and the suitability details are brief rather than supported with specific examples of childcare responsibilities or relevant experience. Most importantly, the free-time point is not really answered. Saying you would spend time with your brother after work does not explain how you would use your free time in Australia more broadly. Develop each bullet point directly and make your plans and qualifications clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a generally clear sequence: you introduce yourself and your circumstances, explain your interest and suitability, then mention your brother and future plans. Paragraphing helps separate these ideas, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “As I mentioned earlier” guide the reader. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. The sentence beginning “As I mentioned earlier that…” is awkwardly connected to the previous paragraph, and the final paragraph about learning Australian culture appears after the free-time discussion without a clear transition. Organise the body around the three requested points and use clearer links between them to make the progression more consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “part-time job,” “tutoring,” “homework,” and “Australian culture.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “delightful food,” though this is not the most natural choice in context. Several spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “styaing” and “oppurtinity” are misspelled, while “take a drop for one year” and “job of similar kind” are awkward expressions. “Hospitality” is also unclear as a reason for taking the job. Aim for accurate, natural phrases and check spelling carefully; this will make your meaning more precise and the letter more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For example, the sentence about your niece combines a reason with a relative clause, and you attempt to explain timing with a longer sentence about your brother’s work. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in clause structure and punctuation. “As I mentioned earlier that I will be visiting my brother” incorrectly combines two clause patterns; write “As I mentioned earlier, I will be visiting my brother.” The long sentence beginning “he has a morning job” also needs clearer punctuation or restructuring, and “when mt brother is back” contains a typing error. More careful sentence boundaries and clause construction would improve accuracy.
