Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
Recently, I saw that you posted an advertisement in an magazine which states that you need someone who can live with you for six months and look after your six year old child.
I am interested in this job because I have finished my studies in child care course, and I am looking for a job related to my field to gain some work experience. I think it's a great opportunity for me to start my career becuase I am looking forward to become a teacher in secondary school.
I would be the most suitable person for this job becuase I have learnt lots of skills on how to handle children between 2-8 years old throughout my course. I know how to react when they are not listening to your instructions without getting angry on them. Also, I love to play with children becuase I feel very happy whenever I am surrounded by them, and that is the reason why I chose to studies in child care.
In my free time, I would love to play with my nephew who is 5 years old. I don't even realise how the time has gone so fast whenever I am playing with him. Therefore, this is the best thing that I would like to when I am in Australia.
I hope you consider my application. Looking forward for a reply.
Kind regards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in childcare work, describe relevant training and experience with children, and mention how you would spend your free time. The reasons for applying are relevant, especially your wish to gain experience and begin a teaching career. Your suitability is supported by knowledge of caring for children aged 2–8 and by your patience, although a specific example of childcare experience would make this more convincing. The free-time point is less fully developed: playing with your nephew is the only activity mentioned, and it does not explain what else you hope to do or see in Australia. A little more detail on this point and a clearer connection between your career goal and the job would make the letter more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the advertisement, explain your motivation, describe your suitability, and then discuss free time. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these points, and links such as “Also” and “Therefore” make relationships between ideas clear. This meets the expected level of overall coherence. Some connections are less natural or precise, however: “Therefore” does not clearly follow from the preceding comment about playing with your nephew, and the final paragraph repeats the idea of playing rather than extending it. The closing is also split into two short fragments. To strengthen progression, use transitions that show the exact relationship between ideas and make the free-time paragraph develop a broader plan for your stay.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “child care,” “work experience,” “handle children,” and “instructions.” The meaning remains clear throughout. However, several choices are inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision and naturalness: “in an magazine” has an article error, “getting angry on them” is an awkward collocation, and “the best thing that I would like to” is incomplete in meaning. The repeated use of “because” and “play” also narrows the range. Spelling errors such as “becuase” and “studies” further affect control. Aim for more natural phrases for childcare skills and leisure plans, and proofread spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “whenever,” and “when,” and most ideas can be understood without difficulty. Some sentences show useful control, such as “I don't even realise how the time has gone so fast whenever I am playing with him.” There are also some grammatical errors: “I am looking forward to become” needs a gerund after “to,” “I chose to studies” has an incorrect verb form, and “the best thing that I would like to” is missing a verb or complement. The closing sentence “Looking forward for a reply” is a fragment and uses an incorrect preposition. Review verb patterns, sentence completeness, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied clauses.
