Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir,

I would like to show my interest regarding the advertisement for a babysiter in a magazine which has been posted by you.

I love to spend time with child. I always keen to go back to my childhood where I had spent my best days. But this not possible now so I like to spend time with the children and recall the memories. I would also like to mention that in Bangladesh I raised two of my cousin's child after their birth and most of the children are love my company. As I already raised children before I know the basic manners and attitudes towards children. Additionally, I have completed a course on how to manage children while baby sitting.

I have enough free time now because I have a limited class in current semester. So I can spend a lot of time with your child and take care of him. As you know I need to save money for my next semester so if you give me this opportunity it will be helpul for me.

I hope you understand my situation.

Sincerely yours,

Mina

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You give relevant reasons for wanting the job, including enjoying children’s company, having cared for two cousins’ children, and completing a childcare course. These details show some suitability, but the response only minimally fulfils the task because one required point is not addressed: you do not say how you would spend your free time in Australia. The paragraph about having limited classes and needing to save money explains your availability and motivation, rather than describing leisure plans. The letter also gives little detail about how your experience would help you care for this particular six-year-old. To improve, cover all three bullet points explicitly and develop each with a specific example, such as activities you would enjoy outside work.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable sequence: you introduce your interest, explain your experience, then discuss your availability and close politely. Paragraph breaks help separate these points, and connectors such as “Additionally” and “So” make some relationships clear. However, progression is not fully effective because the free-time requirement is replaced by information about your classes and finances, and “I hope you understand my situation” does not clearly follow from the preceding request. Some links are also repetitive or mechanical. Organise the body around the three requested points, using a separate paragraph for each, and make references explicit—for example, explain what “this opportunity” would allow you to do.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate your interest and relevant experience, including “raised,” “course,” “manage children,” and “take care of him.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, which makes parts of the letter less clear or polished. For example, “show my interest regarding” is awkward, “most of the children are love my company” is difficult to interpret, and “limited class” does not clearly express your schedule. There is also a spelling error in “babysiter.” Aim for natural phrases suited to a formal application, such as “express my interest in the position,” “children enjoy my company,” and “a light course load.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a reason clause in “because I have a limited class in current semester” and a conditional request beginning “if you give me this opportunity.” The main message is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms remain noticeable. Examples include “I always keen” (missing the verb “am”), “this not possible” (missing “is”), “most of the children are love” (incorrect verb pattern), and “it will be helpul” (incorrect construction). Articles and plurals also need attention, as in “with child” and “two of my cousin's child.” Practise checking each sentence for a subject and finite verb, and review articles, agreement, and plural forms.
