Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Madam,
I hope you are well. I am writing to you regarding an employment opportunity I seen posted in a magazine from Australia which interested me.
One of the reasons I would like the job is I have always dreamed of living in Australia. Since I was young. I want to follow in my fathers footsteps who was born and lived in Australia before he moved back to Ireland. I love the idea of house and child minding at the same time and I believe I am suitable for this role.
I have invaluable personal work experience as both a house maid and as a primary school teaching assistant therefore I have the relevant skills needed for this job. I take great pride in my cleanliness so I would ensure your beautiful home is maintained and I also have relevant working with children's checks.
Whilst not working at your home, I would balance my time so I could spend most of my spare time at the beach. I am a passionate swimmer and surfer and I love socialising at the beach with friends. Moreover, I am also into fitness and I spend a lot of my spare time running and going to the gym.
Yours faithfully,
Niall

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you explain your interest through your family connection to Australia, describe relevant experience as a housemaid and teaching assistant, and outline beach, swimming, surfing, running and gym activities. These details make the letter relevant and give the parents a clear sense of your suitability. The reasons are generally supported, particularly your childcare experience and checks, although the explanation of why you want the role could be developed further beyond the dream of living in Australia and following your father’s footsteps. To strengthen the response, add a specific example of caring for a child or explain how your interests would fit around the family’s needs. The purpose and tone remain clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from your interest in the position, to your qualifications, and then to your plans outside work. Paragraphing supports this structure, and linking expressions such as “therefore,” “Whilst,” and “Moreover” help connect ideas. The reader can follow the message without difficulty. Some connections could be smoother: “Since I was young” is separated from the sentence before it, leaving it as a fragment, and the transition from your family history to your interest in house and child minding is somewhat abrupt. You could combine related ideas and use clearer links to show how your experience supports your motivation. Overall, the organisation is logical, with some room to make cohesion more consistently natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes some relevant, specific expressions, such as “primary school teaching assistant,” “relevant working with children’s checks,” and “passionate swimmer and surfer.” These choices communicate your experience and interests clearly. There are, however, some imprecise or less natural phrases: “an employment opportunity I seen posted” is awkward, while “house maid” and “child minding” could be expressed more naturally and professionally. “Invaluable personal work experience” is also an unusual combination. Aim for accurate collocations and a consistently professional register in a job application letter. A broader range of precise terms for childcare duties and household responsibilities would make your description more flexible without changing its clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “who was born and lived in Australia” and a conditional structure in “I would ensure your beautiful home is maintained.” Most of the message is understandable, and the longer sentences generally communicate connected ideas. Some grammatical errors remain. In “an employment opportunity I seen posted,” the verb form should be “I saw” or “I have seen”; “Since I was young” is an incomplete sentence; and “I love the idea of house and child minding” needs a clearer grammatical construction, such as “I love the idea of looking after a home and a child.” Review verb forms, sentence boundaries and article use. Greater accuracy in these areas would make the letter more polished.
