Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well.I saw the advertisement you made for a nanny, instantly I thought that it rights up my alley as I have a work experience of 3 years in a child care institute.Currently I am studying E -commerce from a university nearby , I started this few months ago while previously I worked in Perth as a part time nanny and I have a good experience in a well known child care here in Austrailia , I am attaching my CV with the letter,so that you can see my detials.
I would really like to do this job as I starting studying here , I had to leave my child care as the timings were same for both and the distance does not allow me to travel there everyday;I had to give up on it and started my studies here. But I actually miss spending time with childrens.
So basically,I would spend my morning in university and from the afternoon till night I'll be there to look after your child.
I would be very thankful,
Yours Sincerely,
Alexa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address the main purpose by explaining your childcare experience and why you want the role, including that you miss spending time with children. You also mention your university schedule and say you would care for the child in the afternoon and evening. However, the suitability point is only partly developed: “good experience” is general, and you give few details about skills or qualities relevant to caring for a six-year-old. The free-time requirement is not really answered; describing when you would work and study is different from explaining what you would do in your free time in Australia. The reason for leaving your previous job is included, but the letter would be more complete with specific childcare strengths and leisure plans.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter has a recognisable sequence: you introduce the advertisement, explain your background and motivation, then describe your schedule and close politely. This gives the reader a basic sense of the message. However, the first paragraph combines several points in one long sentence, making the progression difficult to follow. The shift from your work history to your studies and then to your CV is abrupt, and “So basically” is an informal, mechanical transition into the schedule. Separate the information into clearer paragraphs—motivation, suitability, and free-time plans—and use linking phrases that show how each point relates to the next. This would make the organisation more consistent and the connections between ideas clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “nanny,” “child care,” “part time,” “advertisement,” and “CV,” so the reader can understand the general topic. However, the range is limited and several choices or spellings reduce accuracy and naturalness. “Rights up my alley” appears to be an attempt at “right up my alley,” while “childrens” and “detials” are misspelled or incorrectly formed. Phrases such as “good experience” and “look after your child” are understandable but general; more precise language about childcare responsibilities would strengthen the letter. Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, and choose a suitably formal tone when writing to prospective employers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas using clauses and time expressions, for example in “as I have a work experience of 3 years” and “while previously I worked in Perth.” However, the response relies heavily on long, joined sentences, and these often contain errors that make relationships between ideas unclear. Examples include “I saw the advertisement you made for a nanny, instantly I thought,” which joins two complete ideas without suitable punctuation, and “as I starting studying here,” which has an incorrect verb form. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, such as “a university nearby” followed by several clauses without clear stops. Use shorter, controlled sentences and check verb forms and punctuation before attempting longer structures.
