Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Madam,
I am writing to you with respect to the promo I read in an Australian new paper. I understand you need a care giver that would look after your kid, while you are at work. I believe this offer aligns with my job assignment, because helping children is one gift I enjoy doing.
To begin with, I would like to let you know that, I started my care giver career in an elementary school, where I was given several awards for my dedication and sacrifices. I am also very caring and loving to be with, and the kids enjoy my company.
furthermore, I have been doing this care giver work for 15 years now. Not long ago, a british family from the world organisation WO visited my country for an exhibition. my agency connected me to this family, and I was engaged to look after their children while they were away. I was able to teach them how to make African beeds, which they made several of these beeds amd gifted their parents. My results would speak for me, If I am given this offer.
Finally, It has been my life goal to visit motherless and charity homes during my visit to any country. Hence, I would like to use this medium to inform you that during my stay in Australia, I would like to use my spare time to see non-governmental organisations.
Yours faithfully,
Sotonye Davids

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that you enjoy helping children, give relevant childcare experience, and describe plans to visit charitable organisations in Australia. The examples of receiving awards and caring for a visiting family’s children help make your suitability credible. This meets the task well, but the points are not equally developed: your reasons for wanting this particular six-month live-in role are brief, and the free-time plan is limited to visiting organisations, without explaining what interests you about them or mentioning other activities. To strengthen the response, connect your motivation more directly to living with the family and caring for their six-year-old, and extend the final point with a specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: an opening that identifies the advertisement, paragraphs about your experience, and a final paragraph about your plans in Australia. Transitions such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the main points. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and the long experience paragraph combines several details that would be easier to follow if separated or more clearly connected. The shift from your childcare background to the story about the visiting family could use a clearer link explaining how that experience demonstrates your suitability. Use paragraphing to give each task point a distinct focus, and vary transitions or rely on clear topic sentences rather than repeatedly signalling sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the letter, including relevant terms such as “dedication,” “exhibition,” “agency,” and “non-governmental organisations.” These choices help communicate your experience and interests, and the reader can understand your meaning. Some expressions are less natural or precise, however: “promo” is informal for a job advertisement, “care giver” is repeated, and “my results would speak for me” is not the most suitable way to present your qualifications. There are also spelling errors, including “new paper,” “beeds,” and “amd.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, especially when describing childcare work and your motivation. This would make the letter sound more polished and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the relative clause in “where I was given several awards” and the time clause “while they were away.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors reduce accuracy. For example, the comma in “I would like to let you know that, I started” is misplaced, and “I was able to teach them … which they made” has an unclear clause connection. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “furthermore,” “my,” and “If,” while “I started my … career” and “I have been doing this … for 15 years” show useful control of past and present-perfect forms. Check sentence boundaries, clause links, and capital letters, and revise complex sentences to make their relationships clear.
