Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to apply for live-in nanny position for your six-year-old kid.

I like this kind of job. I believe I have the potential to look after a child. I love to spend time with a six-year-old. I can form a great bond with kids effortlessly. If I get this job, you would never have to worry as parents.

I reckon that I am a suitable candidate for this position. Firstly, I have ample experience and qualifications to deal with children. Secondly, I can teach basic etiquette, which is required of a human being. Lastly, I can ensure your family's safety because I am a black belt in martial arts. I believe these qualities are paramount for this position.

If I have leisure time in Australia, I would prefer to visit all well-known places and have a delicious meal. Moreover, I would like to go on a safari in Australia.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I will wait for your response.

Yours sincerely,

Yana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in childcare, give reasons you could be suitable, and describe plans for your free time in Australia. The experience, qualifications, teaching etiquette, and martial-arts training are relevant, but they are stated rather than supported with specific examples. For instance, “ample experience and qualifications” does not say what experience or qualifications you have, so the parents cannot assess them. Your reason for wanting the job—enjoying time with children—is clear but could be developed by explaining what appeals to you about living with this family or caring for this child. The leisure-time plans are also quite general. Adding concrete details would make the response more fully developed and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised clearly: the opening states its purpose, separate paragraphs cover your motivation, suitability, and free-time plans, and the closing is appropriate. The sequence is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Lastly” help the reader track your reasons. This is a clear overall progression. However, the repeated listing makes the suitability paragraph feel somewhat mechanical, and some links between ideas could be more natural. For example, the transition from teaching etiquette to ensuring the family’s safety is abrupt. You could connect these points with a sentence explaining how your childcare approach combines guidance and safety, while varying the linking expressions rather than relying mainly on numbered transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including relevant terms such as “live-in nanny,” “qualifications,” “etiquette,” and “martial arts.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “suitable candidate” and “time and consideration.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural in this context: “kid” is informal for a letter to prospective employers, “I have the potential to look after a child” is vague, and “go on a safari in Australia” may not express the kind of sightseeing you intend. “Delicious meal” is also generic. Choose more precise, natural expressions and give specific examples of activities or experience; this would make your vocabulary more flexible and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your meaning is generally clear, and you use a mix of short statements and more developed structures, including “If I get this job, you would never have to worry” and the sentence beginning “because I am a black belt in martial arts.” Most sentences are straightforward to understand. Some grammatical issues remain, however. In “apply for live-in nanny position,” the singular count noun needs an article: “apply for a live-in nanny position.” The conditional “If I get this job, you would…” also mixes forms; use “If I got this job, you would…” or “If I get this job, you will…”. In “If I have leisure time … I would prefer,” align the conditional forms as well. Checking articles and conditional patterns would improve accuracy.
