Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to apply for a position as a nanny that you advertised in an Australian magazine. I recently moved to Sydney from Perth a month ago and have been looking for a suitable work position that provides an accommodation as I have been living at my aunt's place.
I am a certified child caretaker and also hold a bachelor's degree in Child education. I have worked as a live-in nanny for a family in Perth for two years, where I was responsible for taking care of two children aged between 3 to 4 years. I was also employed at a local daycare centre during my university years as a part-time worker and was in charge of ten toddlers.
I will be working Monday to Friday as you have mentioned in an ad, therefore on weekends I would like to explore the Sydney city and surrounding areas as I have not travelled to this part of the country. Additionally, I would love to participate in any volunteer activities in the neighbourhood.
I look forward to hearing from you soon
Yours faithfully,
Najmin manga.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain that you want a live-in position, describe relevant childcare qualifications and experience, and outline plans to explore Sydney and volunteer. The details about caring for two young children and working with toddlers make your suitability credible. However, the reason for wanting this particular job is less fully developed: needing accommodation because you are staying with your aunt is clear, but you could also explain your interest in caring for the family’s six-year-old or what attracts you to the role. The free-time plans are relevant but could be more specific. These clear, relevant points are balanced by some underdevelopment, so extending the reasons and plans would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: application and circumstances, childcare experience, then free-time plans and a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the three main purposes, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” connect related ideas. The progression is generally logical, with qualifications followed by practical experience. To make the organisation more polished, connect the accommodation detail more directly to your motivation for applying, rather than leaving the relationship implicit. The transition into the final paragraph could also be smoother, and the closing sentence would benefit from its own punctuation. Overall, the message is easy to follow, with some room to make the links between points more deliberate.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including relevant terms such as “certified,” “live-in nanny,” “daycare centre,” and “volunteer activities.” These choices communicate your experience and plans clearly. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural expressions: “work position” is redundant, “child caretaker” is less idiomatic than a standard childcare job title, and “explore the Sydney city” is not a natural collocation. “Child education” is also unclear as a description of a degree. These do not prevent understanding, but more precise, natural phrasing would show greater control of collocation and register. Aim to use established childcare terminology and concise expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including a complex sentence with “as” to explain your accommodation situation and a relative clause describing your previous role. Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, such as “I have worked as a live-in nanny for a family in Perth for two years.” A few errors remain. In “as you have mentioned in an ad,” the reference to the advertisement would be clearer with a more accurate grammatical construction, and “the Sydney city” shows an article-use problem. The final sentence, “I look forward to hearing from you soon,” needs a full stop. Continue checking articles, sentence punctuation, and the structure of clauses referring to information in the advertisement.
