Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this contemporary era, the number of people are escalating who prefers to shop online rather than visiting physical stores and outlets. This vogue might result in shutting down the shops that are in cities and towns. I agree to this statement as individuals especially young generation is more driven and inclined towards digital shopping as it provides a great sense of flexibility.

To commence with, there are certain benefits of e-shopping. Firstly, it provides convenience and easy accessibility to the consumers. For instance, online applications such as Myntra and Meesho, are in current trend as youngsters are purchasing all kinds of clothing and required accessories from those apps. Secondly, e-commerce provides services like shipping and delivery even from overseas; therefore, people who chooses to buy international items, it becomes relatively easy even to shop from the distant location. Last but not the least, due to influence of social media, individuals are encouraged more to do electronic shopping.

On the flip side, although there are plethora of advantages, the craze of cybershopping contains its own drawbacks. There are potential chances for frauds and scams in online shopping. The respective websites might not deliver the same product as exhibited online and this may lead to customer disappointment.

Moreover, the inclining vogue of e-shopping alleviates the employment opportunities for people who runs small business or outlets in the shopping centres or towns. For instance, retail therapy is in the trend as people likes to visit different shops and showrooms to purchase the items.

To recapitulate, even though the craze of online shopping is proliferating ; since, it provides comfort and availability, its demerits cannot be overlooked.

Overall6.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. You provided relevant arguments for both sides of the issue, such as convenience for online shopping and the negative impact on local employment. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'retail therapy' is mentioned but not fully connected to the argument of whether all shops will close. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with a clear link back to the main thesis. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To commence with', 'Firstly', and 'On the flip side', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the use of a semicolon followed by 'since' in the conclusion. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'people who chooses to buy international items, it becomes relatively easy', where the structure is disjointed. Improving the variety and natural flow of linking words will help elevate your score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary era', 'proliferating', and 'e-commerce'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or collocations, such as 'inclining vogue' or 'alleviates the employment opportunities' (where 'reduces' or 'threatens' would be more accurate). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some of these choices are not entirely precise. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but more precise and idiomatic usage would be required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of people are escalating', 'people who chooses'), and awkward phrasing ('people who runs small business'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some errors in sentence construction that affect clarity. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct relative clauses and conjunctions. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response.
