Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this fast-paced world, people usually prefer online shopping. I believe that the growth of online shopping will increase in coming times. And that would affect all the shops in cities and towns badly. This essay will discuss the various reasons behind this trend.

To begin with, the primary reason for the online purchase is that it saves time. In other words, people do not need to find some separate time for shopping. For example, a person who is working in an office and doing a 9-to-5 job often does not get time for other activities. This is a great way to fulfill their needs.

Another example of this trend is that it offers us a variety of products and saves transportation expenses. That means if individuals go to shops to buy something, they need to waste money on transport. For instance, if they prefer their own car, they may face parking difficulty in an urban area. Additionally, sometimes citizens are not able to find a cloth of their own size. So, online shopping has a very good impact on people's savings.

To conclude, there is a wide range of reasons behind this fact

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 194 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the essay is cut short and lacks a proper conclusion. While the writer addresses the prompt by stating their belief that online shopping will negatively affect physical stores, the arguments are under-developed. The essay lacks a balanced discussion or a clear counter-argument, which is necessary for a high-scoring response to this type of prompt. To improve, you must expand on your points with more detailed explanations and ensure you provide a full, well-structured conclusion that summarizes your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices like 'To begin with' and 'Another example' is functional but basic. The conclusion is extremely abrupt, consisting of only one sentence fragment, which disrupts the overall flow and coherence of the piece. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details, leading to a more substantial and cohesive conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. Phrases like 'badly', 'very good impact', and 'waste money' are somewhat simplistic. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'retail landscape', 'brick-and-mortar stores', 'convenience', or 'economic implications'. Focusing on collocations—words that naturally go together—will also help make your writing sound more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'find a cloth of their own size' (should be 'clothing' or 'clothes') and 'the growth of online shopping will increase in coming times'. Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety is limited. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or relative clauses, while ensuring that your basic grammar remains accurate.
