Student answer (Band 7.0)
The rising popularity of online shopping nowadays have raised concerns for the local shopowners. It might lead to the closure of the traditional shops in near future and I agree to this point.
Firstly, the online platforms offer wide range of products and in multiple varities, sizes, and colours. Hence, it is easy for customers to browse all the products online that they desire to buy. Additionally, it is easy to access all brands under one roof like Amazon, Flipkart, Temu, Shien etc. They also provide home deliveries which make it more convinient for the clients. I save lots of time and can help reduce unnecessary travel. For instance, if you subscribe to Amazon membership you receive some perks such as free next day delivery.
Secondly, the online platforms dont have to spend much on the infrastructure as the traditional shops and has collaboration with big brands in result, it offer same products at lower costs than the local shopowners. They also run heavy discounted sales during the festive seasons which attract more and more people to shop online. Moreover, expensive products such as electronic appliances can be purchased on monthly installments. For example, person living paycheque to paycheque cannot have enough money to buy costly appliance so, the monthly installment plans can help in this kind of situation. Also, they propose free return policies for certain objects. Finally, the online payment method is very secure and can be done just by one click from the smartphones or computers.
To conclude, there are lot of advantages that outweigh the disadvantages of people preferring to buy online rather than shops in towns and hence, it may lead to shutting down of the local shops.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that online shopping will lead to the closure of physical stores. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples such as Amazon and the convenience of home delivery. However, the development is somewhat superficial; for instance, the argument regarding 'lower costs' could be expanded by discussing the overheads of physical retail versus digital logistics. While the position is consistent, the conclusion is a bit abrupt and could have better synthesised the main points to provide a more robust final summary. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the frequent use of 'the online platforms' could be improved by using pronouns or synonyms to enhance flow. Paragraphing is logical, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the convenience of shopping to the economic advantages, which helps maintain the reader's interest throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'infrastructure', 'installments', and 'logistics' (implied). However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'convinient' (convenient), 'varities' (varieties), and 'Shien' (Shein). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the sophistication or precision required for a higher band. Using more varied collocations would elevate the quality of the writing significantly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'The rising popularity... have raised' (should be 'has raised') and 'the online platforms... has collaboration' (should be 'have collaboration'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in near future' (in the near future) and 'person living paycheque to paycheque' (a person). These errors do not impede communication but are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
